Southern Railway Announces Key Operational Changes for Express Trains
In a significant move to enhance connectivity and passenger convenience, Southern Railway has unveiled two major updates affecting express train services in the region. These changes, set to take effect from mid-March, include an experimental additional stoppage and the regularization of a weekly special service.
Experimental Stoppage at Panruti for Tambaram-Rameswaram Express
Effective from March 16, the Tambaram - Rameswaram - Tambaram daily express will now include an experimental stoppage at Panruti. This new halt is strategically located between Villupuram and Tiruppadirippuliyur, aiming to improve access for commuters in the area. The decision is part of Southern Railway's ongoing efforts to optimize routes and respond to passenger demand on a trial basis.
Regularization of Ernakulam-Velankanni Weekly Express
In another development, the Ernakulam Junction - Velankanni - Ernakulam Junction weekly special service will be regularized as a weekly express starting March 18. This upgrade formalizes the service, providing more reliable scheduling for travelers.
The train will depart from Ernakulam Junction at 11:50 PM on Wednesdays, arriving at Velankanni by 5:35 PM the following day. For the return journey, the Velankanni - Ernakulam Junction weekly express will leave Velankanni at 7:45 PM on Thursdays from March 19, reaching Ernakulam Junction at 11:55 AM the next day.
Coach Composition and Amenities
The newly regularized Velankanni express will feature a comprehensive coach configuration designed to cater to diverse passenger needs:
- Four general second class coaches
- Eight sleeper class coaches
- Three AC 3 tier coaches
- One AC two tier coach
- One second class luggage plus Divyangjan compartment coach
- A generator car for uninterrupted power supply
These changes underscore Southern Railway's commitment to enhancing rail infrastructure and service quality across southern India, potentially boosting tourism and local travel in the affected regions.
