Metroman Sreedharan Reveals Ambitious High-Speed Rail Plan for Kerala
In a significant announcement at the Institution of Engineers of India in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday, veteran railway engineer and 'Metroman' E Sreedharan detailed a proposed high-speed railway project for Kerala that promises to revolutionize travel in the state.
Affordable Ticket Pricing and Timelines
Sreedharan confirmed that tickets for the high-speed rail would be more affordable than Vande Bharat Express services, with the detailed project report (DPR) expected to be completed by May 2024. He emphasized that if a BJP government assumes power in the state, construction could commence within three months.
The projected fares present substantial savings compared to existing options. A journey from Thiruvananthapuram to Ernakulam would cost Rs 440, significantly lower than the Rs 660 charged by Vande Bharat. Similarly, Ernakulam to Kozhikode would be priced at Rs 420, while Kozhikode to Kannur would cost Rs 305.
Key Route Specifications and Capacity
The flagship Thiruvananthapuram to Kannur route would take approximately three hours with a ticket price of Rs 780. Sreedharan highlighted the system's impressive capacity potential, stating that with trains operating every half hour during peak periods at 80% occupancy, daily ridership could reach 45,000.
"If trains run every five minutes, we can transport up to 5 lakh passengers daily," Sreedharan explained. "That represents tremendous capacity and demonstrates the project's viability."
Financial and Operational Framework
The estimated project cost stands at Rs 54,000 crore for half-hourly train operations, which Sreedharan noted is more economical than the proposed K-Rail project. Operation and maintenance costs—including energy, staffing, and upkeep—formed the basis for determining ticket rates.
A unique aspect involves energy self-sufficiency through solar power. "The entire energy requirement will be generated by installing solar panels on station roofs and depots," Sreedharan said. "This approach helps maintain low ticket prices while ensuring sustainability."
Land Acquisition and Project Structure
Sreedharan addressed potential land acquisition concerns, noting minimal requirements with a lease-back arrangement. "Land will be returned to owners under conditions prohibiting tall trees and construction," he clarified, adding that this model has faced little opposition.
The project would be executed through a special purpose vehicle with 51% central government ownership. "The Centre will handle planning, funding, and operations, with the state as a partner," Sreedharan stated, suggesting Delhi Metro's involvement could ensure completion within five years due to their quality work culture.
Environmental and Safety Benefits
The high-speed rail promises substantial environmental advantages. Sreedharan projected that if 30,000 passengers switch from road to rail, 82 tonnes of petrol and diesel could be saved daily, significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Safety represents another critical benefit, given Kerala's high road accident rates. "This rail system will save lives," Sreedharan asserted, also highlighting expected high punctuality and reliability.
Future Expansion Plans
Phase two envisions branch lines including Kozhikode to Kalpatta and Pattambi to Palakkad. Additional routes could transform travel times dramatically—Pathanamthitta to Pamba in 20 minutes and Thiruvananthapuram to Parassala in 30 minutes, addressing heavy suburban traffic.
Sreedharan concluded optimistically about passenger adoption: "Commuters using Parasuram Express and other services can switch to this affordable, punctual alternative. This isn't mere boasting—it's entirely achievable."
