Odisha's Aviation Sector Suffers Another Blow as Key Regional Route is Suspended
The aviation landscape in Odisha has been dealt a significant setback with the sudden withdrawal of air connectivity between Bhubaneswar and Jharsuguda. On Sunday, Star Air, the sole carrier operating on this route, ceased its services, leaving passengers, officials, and business communities deeply concerned about the shrinking air links with the state capital.
Jharsuguda Becomes the 10th Domestic Destination to Lose Connectivity
This development marks a troubling trend, as Jharsuguda now joins a growing list of destinations that have been derostered from Bhubaneswar's network. Previously, nine other domestic cities—Indore, Dehradun, Jaipur, Lucknow, Goa, MOPA, Port Blair, Cochin, and Hindon—along with two international routes, have been dropped. This widening gap between aviation plans and actual services on the ground has been highlighted by civil aviation experts as a critical issue.
Currently, Bhubaneswar maintains air links with only 18 cities, with Singapore standing as the lone international destination. The suspension of the Jharsuguda flight comes at a particularly ironic time, given ongoing discussions about expanding civil aviation infrastructure and flight services across Odisha.
High Demand Route Cut Despite Strong Passenger Numbers
Officials have expressed dismay over the decision, noting that the route was witnessing robust passenger demand. U N Dhaundia, director in-charge of Veer Surendra Sai Airport in Jharsuguda, revealed, "The Jharsuguda-Bhubaneswar flight, which operated with a 70-seater aircraft, was booked to capacity every single day. The airline cited commercial reasons for halting operations, but we are hopeful for a swift resumption."
The Bhubaneswar-Jharsuguda air link had emerged as a vital corridor for corporate executives, senior government officers, professionals, and businessmen traveling between the state capital and key western Odisha towns such as Sambalpur, Bargarh, Balangir, and Jharsuguda itself. The short flight offered a practical alternative to lengthy road journeys, significantly cutting travel time and enhancing efficiency.
Passengers Face Increased Costs and Inconvenience
For regular fliers, the abrupt withdrawal has come as a shock, with expectations of sharply rising travel costs and major inconveniences. Debashis Patnaik, a hotelier, explained, "This route was a boon for passengers arriving from Delhi and other major cities. They could fly into Jharsuguda and quickly connect to Bhubaneswar for onward travel to Cuttack and industrial hubs like Jajpur and Paradip. Now, with the service discontinued, these travelers must rely on lengthy road trips to Bhubaneswar or first travel by road to Rourkela to catch the still-operational Rourkela-Bhubaneswar flight. This additional leg is likely to inflate both travel time and expenses."
Renewed Concerns Over Regional Air Network Fragility
The latest disruption has reignited concerns about the fragility of Odisha's regional air network. Radheshyam Sharma, a businessman and frequent traveler on this route, emphasized, "For western Odisha, the loss of the Bhubaneswar-Jharsuguda flight is not just about suspending one route; it represents a severe blow to business mobility, administrative access, and regional integration within the state."
This incident underscores the challenges faced in maintaining consistent air connectivity in regional markets, despite evident demand. As Odisha strives to boost its aviation sector, the suspension of such a critical route serves as a stark reminder of the hurdles that must be overcome to achieve sustainable growth and connectivity.
