South Western Railway Achieves Major Milestone with Almatti-Wandal Double Line Commissioning

In a significant development for rail infrastructure in Karnataka, the South Western Railway (SWR) has officially commissioned the newly laid Broad Gauge double line between Almatti and Wandal. This section, covering a total length of 9.60 kilometers, was opened for public passenger carriage on March 25, 2026, as part of the broader Gadag–Hotgi Doubling Project.

Key Infrastructure Components of the New Section

The newly commissioned Almatti–Wandal section includes several critical infrastructure elements designed to enhance rail operations. Most notably, it features an important open web girder bridge across the Parvatikatti River, which comprises 9 spans, each measuring 45.72 meters. In addition to this major bridge, the project has completed one minor bridge, one road over bridge (ROB), and various other associated infrastructure works.

This section was identified as one of the important pending links in the doubling project, and its completion marks the final milestone of the Gadag–Hotgi Doubling Project under the South Western Railway. With the commissioning of this section, the entire Gadag–Hotgi doubling project now stands fully completed, representing a major achievement in regional rail development.
