Trichy Airport Sets New Records in Passenger and Cargo Traffic for 2025-26
Trichy Airport Hits Record 2.2M Passengers, 7,184T Cargo

Trichy International Airport Achieves Historic Milestones in Passenger and Cargo Operations

Trichy International Airport has marked a significant achievement in the 2025-26 financial year, handling a record-breaking 2.2 million passengers. This milestone represents the first time the airport has crossed the two-million passenger mark, showcasing robust growth in air travel demand. Additionally, the airport registered its highest-ever cargo throughput, with 7,184 tonnes of freight moved during the same period, setting a new benchmark for non-metro airports in India.

Driving Factors Behind the Passenger Traffic Surge

According to data from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the airport handled 1.9 million passengers in the previous financial year, 2024-25, which was its previous best performance. The growth to 2.2 million passengers in 2025-26 can be attributed to several key factors. Improved connectivity and increased demand following the commissioning of the new integrated terminal played a crucial role in boosting passenger numbers. While a few new international routes were introduced, including services to Jaffna, Bangkok, and Ho Chi Minh City, the latter two were later withdrawn, leaving Jaffna as the only new addition. However, higher seat occupancy on existing international routes helped sustain international passenger traffic without a major decline.

Additional services to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur were instrumental in pushing overall passenger numbers past the two-million mark by March 20. On the domestic front, traffic registered a sharp 48% increase, driven by new and additional services to major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Kochi. This domestic expansion contributed significantly to the overall growth, highlighting the airport's enhanced role in regional connectivity.

Cargo Operations and Challenges Faced

Cargo movement at Trichy airport also recorded impressive growth, rising by approximately 11% from 6,480 tonnes in 2024-25 to 7,184 tonnes in 2025-26. This marks the first time the airport has crossed the 7,000-tonne mark in cargo throughput. Despite this achievement, the airport faced disruptions due to the Gulf crisis and IndiGo's airline scheduling issues, which impacted both passenger traffic and export cargo. Airport director S S Raju noted that if not for these challenges, which grounded services to three UAE destinations for over a month, both passenger traffic and export cargo could have been higher, and the milestone might have been achieved earlier.

Statements from Key Officials and Future Plans

Durai Vaiko, Trichy MP and chairman of the airport advisory committee, emphasized the importance of integrating domestic and international traffic for this achievement. He stated, "The integration of domestic and international traffic from Trichy airport is pivotal to this achievement. IndiGo and Air India Express were urged to operate additional domestic services, and the demand materialised well." Looking ahead, efforts are underway to further boost cargo operations. A proposal is being considered to utilize the old terminal exclusively for aviation-related activities, including freight handling, which could enhance efficiency and capacity for future growth.

In summary, Trichy International Airport's record performance in 2025-26 underscores its growing significance in India's aviation landscape, driven by strategic expansions and resilience in the face of operational challenges.
