Trichy-Karaikal Train Restored, New Velankanni Route Launched

Southern Railway Restores Key DEMU Service and Introduces New Pilgrimage Route

In a significant boost to regional connectivity in Tamil Nadu, Southern Railway has announced the restoration of the DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) train service connecting Trichy and Karaikal, effective from May 20. This move re-establishes a vital transportation link through the fertile delta districts, enhancing travel options for thousands of daily commuters and pilgrims.

Trichy-Karaikal Service Returns After Operational Shift

The train service, operating as numbers 76826/76825, will resume its original route between Trichy and Karaikal, passing through important stations including Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam. This restoration marks a return to normalcy after the service was temporarily rerouted to operate between Trichy and Velankanni several years ago.

That earlier rerouting was implemented to improve access to the prominent pilgrimage center at Velankanni, following the completion of gauge conversion and electrification work on the Nagapattinam-Velankanni section. Now, with the Trichy-Karaikal route restored, passengers will enjoy direct connectivity between these two important urban centers.

Peralam-Karaikal Section Becomes Fully Operational

A crucial development enabling this restoration is the completion of the gauge conversion project on the 23-kilometre Peralam-Karaikal section. This infrastructure upgrade, executed at a cost of approximately Rs 320 crores, has transformed this railway stretch into a fully operational corridor ready for regular service commencement on May 20.

The Peralam-Karaikal route features several important stops including:

  • Peralam
  • Ambagarattur
  • Pattakudi
  • Thirunallar
  • Karai Kovilpatthu
  • Karaikal

This gauge conversion represents a substantial investment in regional rail infrastructure that will benefit passengers for decades to come.

New Train Services Connect Pilgrimage Centers

Capitalizing on the newly upgraded infrastructure, Southern Railway is introducing two new passenger services through the Peralam-Karaikal section. The most notable addition is Train No. 56008/56007, which will operate between Velankanni and Mayiladuthurai, providing a direct rail connection for the first time between these important locations.

This new service will connect several significant pilgrimage and cultural centers along its route:

  1. Velankanni - Renowned Christian pilgrimage site
  2. Nagapattinam - Coastal town with historical significance
  3. Nagore - Important Muslim pilgrimage destination
  4. Karaikal - Union territory with French colonial heritage
  5. Thirunallar - Famous for its Saturn temple
  6. Mayiladuthurai - Temple town with cultural importance

Additionally, Train No. 56009/56010 will operate between Mayiladuthurai and Karaikal, further enhancing regional connectivity options for passengers traveling between these destinations.

Enhanced Regional Connectivity and Economic Benefits

The restoration of the Trichy-Karaikal service and introduction of new routes represents a comprehensive upgrade to Southern Railway's network in the delta region. These improvements will:

  • Facilitate easier pilgrimage travel to multiple religious sites
  • Improve daily commuting options for residents of delta districts
  • Boost tourism potential across the region
  • Support economic activity through better transportation infrastructure
  • Provide more efficient connections between urban and rural areas

With these changes taking effect from May 20, passengers can look forward to more convenient and reliable rail travel options throughout Tamil Nadu's culturally rich delta region.
