Trichy Railway Division Inaugurates Second Rail Coach Restaurant at Thanjavur Junction
The Trichy railway division has expanded its innovative dining offerings with the inauguration of a new rail coach restaurant at Thanjavur Junction. This marks the second such facility within the division, following the successful launch of the first one outside the Rail Museum near Trichy Railway Junction in October 2024.
Inauguration and Key Details
Divisional Railway Manager Balak Ram Negi officially opened the restaurant, named 'Railadi Subbaiyah's Tiffin', on Friday. The event was attended by senior divisional commercial manager Rathi Priya and other branch officers, highlighting the division's commitment to enhancing passenger amenities and generating additional revenue streams.
The restaurant is housed in a rail coach that has reached the end of its codal life, repurposed into a pure vegetarian dining space. This initiative not only promotes sustainability by reusing retired equipment but also provides a unique culinary experience for travelers and locals alike.
Design and Operational Aspects
Featuring an air-conditioned environment, the facility boasts a heritage-inspired interior design that blends traditional aesthetics with modern amenities. An official from the division noted that this approach aims to deliver a distinctive and enjoyable dining experience, merging historical charm with contemporary comfort.
The operating contract for the restaurant has been awarded to Jothi Snacks, based in Thanjavur, for a period of five years. This partnership is expected to ensure efficient management and high-quality service, contributing to the project's goal of boosting non-fare revenue for the railways.
Future Expansion Plans
Looking ahead, the Trichy railway division is actively working on establishing additional rail coach restaurants in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam. Furthermore, plans are underway to introduce similar facilities at key stations such as Trichy Fort and Villupuram, indicating a broader strategy to replicate this successful model across the region.
This expansion is anticipated to not only enhance passenger convenience but also significantly increase non-fare revenue, supporting the railways' financial sustainability.
