Vande Bharat Trains to Enhance Bengaluru-Coastal Karnataka Connectivity
In a significant boost to rail infrastructure in southern India, two new Vande Bharat trains are set to operate between Bengaluru and the coastal region of Karnataka. This development promises to revolutionize travel for both daily commuters and tourists seeking faster, more modern rail options.
Electrification and Safety Tests Completed on Ghat Section
The crucial Hassan–Mangaluru ghat section has achieved full electrification, marking a major milestone in this project. Safety certification tests are currently in progress, and once all necessary clearances are obtained, the official timetable for the new Vande Bharat services will be finalized. This electrification effort is part of broader initiatives to modernize India's railway network.
Extension to Karwar and Multiple Rakes Deployment
The upcoming coastal Karnataka Vande Bharat trains will be extended all the way to Karwar, significantly improving accessibility to the farthest coastal areas. Unlike many other routes that operate with a single train rake, this route will deploy two rakes. This strategic decision ensures wider coverage of the coastal region and reduces waiting times for passengers, enhancing overall service efficiency.
Karnataka's Growing Vande Bharat Network
Karnataka already boasts an impressive fleet of 12 Vande Bharat trains connecting major cities and towns across the state. The addition of these new coastal route trains will further expand this semi-high-speed rail network, solidifying Karnataka's position as a leader in modern rail transportation in India.
Substantial Railway Funding and Major Projects
Railway projects in Karnataka have received a substantial allocation of Rs 7,748 crore in the latest Union Budget, representing a significant increase compared to previous years. This funding injection is expected to accelerate the development of rail infrastructure throughout the state. Currently, rail projects worth over Rs 52,900 crore are underway in Karnataka, including:
- Track electrification initiatives
- Construction of new stations
- Modernization programs aimed at improving passenger safety and travel comfort
Future High-Speed Rail Corridors
Looking ahead, ambitious plans are in motion for high-speed rail connectivity. A proposed Bengaluru–Chennai high-speed rail corridor could reduce travel time between these major cities to approximately 73 minutes. Similarly, a planned Bengaluru–Hyderabad bullet train corridor aims to connect the two cities in about two hours, dramatically enhancing business and tourism links in the region.
Advancements in Suburban Rail Infrastructure
The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project is making steady progress, with a railway technical expert recently appointed as managing director of KRIDE (Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation). This strategic appointment is expected to improve planning, execution, and coordination of urban rail infrastructure projects across Karnataka, ensuring more efficient development of the state's transportation network.
