Jharsuguda's VSS Airport Prepares for Cargo Launch After Security Review
In a significant development for regional infrastructure, cargo services at Veer Surendra Sai (VSS) Airport in Jharsuguda are on the verge of commencement, according to airport director Upendra Nath Dhaundia. A specialized committee led by J P Baxla, Regional Director of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in Bhubaneswar, recently conducted an extensive security vetting at the airport. The committee included senior representatives from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), intelligence agencies, airline officials, and cargo operation experts. Their primary objective was to assess the feasibility and security preparedness for initiating cargo movements through the existing passenger terminal.
During their visit, the team performed a detailed inspection of both city-side and airside areas within the terminal building. They meticulously evaluated the current infrastructure, operational protocols, and safety measures necessary to support cargo handling. This comprehensive review ensured that all security standards were met for the proposed operations.

Airport Director Upendra Nath Dhaundia confirmed the imminent start of cargo services, stating, "The cargo service will start shortly at VSS Airport. A meeting chaired by the BCAS regional director was held, and a site visit was conducted. The team acknowledged the airport's potential for both inbound and outbound cargo. Necessary approvals are expected soon, after which operations will begin."
He further elaborated that initial operations will be launched on a limited scale, taking into account the existing infrastructure. "As of now, we will start with a small cargo movement. Expansion will depend on future demand and infrastructure upgrades," Dhaundia added, indicating a phased approach to growth.
