West Asia Conflict Threatens India-Oman Free Trade Agreement Timeline

Top government officials confirmed on Thursday that the escalating conflict in West Asia has introduced significant uncertainty regarding the rollout of the India-Oman free trade agreement. This pact, which was initially scheduled to take effect from April 1, now faces potential delays due to regional instability.

UK and EU Trade Deals Remain on Course

In contrast to the Oman situation, the United Kingdom is firmly on track to implement its bilateral trade treaty with India around May 1. Additionally, the European Union has indicated that it is progressing steadily toward securing the necessary approvals for its comprehensive trade agreement with India, with a target timeline around November.

Oman CEPA Ratification Hampered by Regional Tensions

The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Oman was formally signed in December of last year. For the agreement to become operational, it requires ratification by the Omani government in Muscat. However, the recent hostilities in the Gulf region, including attacks involving Iran, have created a complex geopolitical environment that may postpone the treaty's benefits from commencing at the start of April as planned.
