Hotels Forced to Adapt Amid LPG Crisis
Numerous establishments in the districts of Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Erode have abandoned commercial LPG cylinders in favor of firewood. The disruption in gas supply, attributed to the geopolitical tensions in West Asia, has left business owners scrambling for alternatives to keep their kitchens running.
Firewood seller S Prakash from Namakkal confirmed a noticeable uptick in demand, stating, "The number of customers purchasing firewood has significantly risen over the past two days." This shift is not by choice but necessity, as highlighted by local bakery and restaurant proprietors.
Businesses Voice Concerns Over Sustainability
K Suresh, a restaurant owner in Salem, expressed deep anxiety about the situation. "We are compelled to buy firewood as a substitute, but the required quantities are hard to come by. There is a genuine fear that we may not be able to sustain our business if this continues," he lamented. The sentiment is echoed across the region, where the reliability of LPG deliveries has become unpredictable.
Mohammad Khan, an eatery owner in Salem, shared his firsthand experience: "LPG cylinders have not been delivered even three days after booking. We had no option but to purchase firewood to cook food." He detailed the financial impact, noting that a 25 kg bundle of firewood, previously sold for Rs 110, was being sold at Rs 180 on Wednesday. His establishment spent Rs 4,500 on firewood to meet immediate needs.
Economic and Operational Challenges Mount
The transition to firewood is not without its challenges. Beyond the price inflation, businesses face logistical hurdles in sourcing adequate supplies and adapting their cooking processes. This shift underscores the broader economic vulnerabilities exposed by international conflicts, affecting even local industries in distant regions.
