A 19-year-old NEET aspirant died by suicide in Dehradun, just days before the scheduled re-examination. The incident has once again raised concerns about the mental health pressures faced by medical entrance exam candidates.
Incident Details
The student, identified as Ravi Kumar, was found hanging in his rented room in the Patel Nagar area of Dehradun on Wednesday evening. Police were alerted by the landlord after the student did not respond to calls. A suicide note was recovered from the scene, in which the aspirant expressed distress over the upcoming NEET re-exam and the immense academic pressure.
Police Investigation
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dehradun, Rajesh Kumar, confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway. The suicide note has been sent for forensic analysis. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the student had been under severe stress due to the competitive nature of the exam and the fear of failure.
Police have also recorded statements from the student's family and friends. The family has alleged that the student was being pressured by coaching institutes to perform well, which added to his anxiety.
Reactions
The incident has sparked outrage among student groups and parents, who are demanding better mental health support for exam aspirants. Many have taken to social media to express their condolences and call for systemic changes to reduce the pressure on students.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan expressed grief over the incident and assured that the government is committed to addressing mental health issues among students. He urged coaching institutes and parents to be more supportive and understanding.
Mental Health Concerns
This tragic event has once again highlighted the mental health crisis among students preparing for competitive exams. Psychologists and counselors emphasize the need for early intervention and accessible mental health resources. They advise students to seek help if they feel overwhelmed and remind them that failure in an exam is not the end of the road.
The NEET re-exam, scheduled for June 20, 2026, will proceed as planned, but authorities are considering implementing measures to provide psychological support to candidates during the examination process.
