Slum Girl Tops MP 12th Board, Overcomes Financial Hurdles

Chandni Vishwakarma, a resident of Bhopal's Bhim Nagar colony, has proven that narrow slum lanes cannot stifle big dreams. She is among the top scorers in Madhya Pradesh's 12th board examinations. Living in a modest one-room home with her family, Chandni hails from a humble background.

Family Background and Support

Her father works as a carpenter, earning approximately ₹500 per day, while her mother is employed in a mid-day meal programme at a local school. In a recent BBC documentary, Chandni expressed gratitude towards her parents, stating, "Both of them have struggled a lot."

Recalling the moment the results were announced, her mother emotionally said, "I got so emotional that I didn't know what to say." She remembered watching on television how toppers were celebrated and people came to congratulate them, and now the same was happening at her home. Her father quietly takes pride, still finding it hard to believe his daughter's achievement.

Academic Achievement Amidst Adversity

Chandni scored an impressive 494 out of 500 marks in the commerce stream. Describing her parents' emotions, she said, "My parents have a calm nature; they just became emotional." However, behind that calm support was a daily environment far from easy for studying. Success did not come from ideal conditions but despite them.

Financial and Environmental Challenges

Chandni's journey was shaped by financial limitations and her determination to overcome them. "There have been financial issues," she shared, as her father's daily wage supports a family of four. Every expense had to be carefully managed. In addition to financial worries, constant disturbances from loudspeaker noise and unreliable electricity were persistent hurdles. Yet, instead of feeling burdened, Chandni became more resilient.

Parental Pride and Gratitude

While Chandni credits her parents for her success, her parents credit her. Her mother said with heartfelt gratitude, "I pray to God that if one has a daughter, she should be like Chandni." She recalled how Chandni never demanded more than the family could afford, saying, "She saw our struggles, so she never desired anything."

Today, Chandni Vishwakarma's achievement is not just about scoring 98.8% but a reminder that beyond facilities and resources, it is often the home environment that shapes how far a child can go and how big their dreams can be.
