Who can participate in JoSAA 2026 counselling?
For IIT admissions, candidates must qualify JEE Advanced 2026 and meet the eligibility conditions set for IITs. For NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, candidates must hold a valid JEE Main 2026 rank and complete the JoSAA registration and choice filling process. Students who qualify JEE Advanced are also eligible for NIT, IIIT, and GFTI admissions through their JEE Main rank.
How the counselling process works
The JoSAA counselling process comprises multiple stages. Candidates first register on the official portal and then fill and arrange their preferred institutes and branches. Mock seat allotments are released to help students understand their likely outcomes and adjust preferences. This is followed by several rounds of seat allocation based on rank, category, seat availability, and preferences.
Step 1: Registration on JoSAA Portal
Eligible candidates must register on the official JoSAA counselling portal using their JEE Main or JEE Advanced credentials. This step confirms participation in the counselling process. Only registered candidates are considered for seat allotment.
Step 2: Choice filling and locking
After registration, students must select their preferred institutes and branches. This is one of the most important stages, as candidates can choose across IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Candidates must arrange their choices in order of preference. Once satisfied, they must lock their choices before the deadline. If not locked manually, the system automatically locks the final saved list.
Step 3: Mock seat allotment
JoSAA releases mock seat allotments before the actual rounds. These mock results give students an idea of the colleges and branches they may get based on their current preferences. Candidates are allowed to modify and reorder their choices after seeing the mock allotment to improve their chances in the final rounds.
Step 4: Actual seat allotment rounds
The official seat allocation takes place in multiple rounds. In each round, seats are allotted based on JEE Main or JEE Advanced rank, category (General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, PwD), availability of seats, and the candidate's order of preferences. If a candidate meets the cutoff for a preferred seat and it is available, it is allotted accordingly.
Step 5: Seat acceptance options
Once a seat is allotted, candidates must choose one of the following options: Freeze (accept the allotted seat and exit further rounds), Float (accept the seat but remain eligible for higher preference options in upcoming rounds), or Slide (accept the institute but remain open to a better branch within the same institute). This step provides flexibility during the counselling process.
Step 6: Online reporting, document verification, and fee payment
After accepting a seat, candidates must complete online reporting, which includes uploading documents, verifying details, and paying the seat acceptance fee. Documents are checked to ensure eligibility and authenticity before final confirmation.
Step 7: Final Admission and Institute Reporting
Once verification is complete, the candidate is provisionally admitted. In the final step, students must physically report to their allotted institute within the given timeline to complete admission formalities.

JoSAA counselling includes admissions to more than 100 premier engineering institutes across India, including 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and several GFTIs. These institutes collectively offer over 60,000 engineering seats through the centralized system.
