1,800+ Industry Experts Join Academia as Professors of Practice

Over 1,800 Industry Leaders Step into Academia as Professors of Practice Nationwide

In a landmark initiative to revolutionize higher education, the Ministry of Education has announced the appointment of 1,841 industry professionals as Professors of Practice (PoP) across 349 universities and colleges in India. This strategic move, implemented under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to bridge the critical gap between academic theory and real-world industry practices, fostering a more dynamic and skill-oriented learning environment for students.

Strengthening Skill-Based Learning and Industry Collaboration

Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, emphasized in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha that this program is designed to strengthen skill-based learning and promote robust industry-academia collaboration. He clarified that the PoP role is temporary and honorary, allowing distinguished experts in leadership positions to contribute to nation-building by sharing their invaluable knowledge and hands-on experience without the need for formal academic qualifications.

State-Wise Distribution and Institutional Leadership

The adoption of the PoP model varies significantly across states and types of institutions:

  • Tamil Nadu leads with 395 appointments, followed by Maharashtra (193), Gujarat (179), Karnataka (170), and Uttar Pradesh (157).
  • Smaller states and Union Territories have embraced the initiative in more modest proportions.
  • In terms of institutional categories:
    1. Private universities have taken the forefront with 715 appointments.
    2. Deemed universities follow with 699.
    3. State universities account for 212.
    4. Central universities have 15.
    5. Colleges contribute an additional 200 to the total.

Key Features of the Professor of Practice Role

The Professor of Practice position introduces a flexible and innovative approach to faculty recruitment in higher education:

  • It allows industry and professional experts to join academia even without traditional academic credentials like a PhD, which is currently required for regular professor or associate professor roles.
  • The tenure is capped at three years, with a possible one-year extension in exceptional cases, but not exceeding four years in total.
  • Up to 10% of sanctioned posts in a higher education institution can be allocated to Professors of Practice.
  • Eligible candidates must be distinguished experts with at least 15 years of service or experience, having made remarkable contributions in fields such as science, technology, social sciences, media, and the armed forces.

Funding Categories and Future Implications

To support this initiative, three new funding categories have been established:

  1. Professor of Practice funded by industries.
  2. Professor of Practice funded by higher education institutions from their own resources.
  3. Professor of Practice on an honorary basis.

This structured approach ensures sustainability and encourages diverse participation from various sectors. By integrating industry veterans into academic settings, the PoP program is poised to enhance practical learning, drive innovation, and better prepare students for the demands of the modern workforce, aligning with the broader goals of NEP 2020 to transform India's education landscape.
