AI-Powered Tools Revolutionize Learning in Maharashtra Government Schools
In a remarkable turnaround, Std III student Yash Khomne from a zilla parishad school in Marathwada has transformed from a hesitant learner to a classroom leader. Until last year, Yash rarely participated in class, struggled with basic reading, and often remained silent during lessons. Today, he confidently answers questions, helps peers with arithmetic, and even leads class singing sessions.
The Digital Transformation Behind Student Success
Yash's dramatic improvement began when his school introduced AI-enabled educational tools developed by the Sampark Foundation. His classroom now features interactive videos and educational songs played through Sampark TV, followed by prompts from an AI-supported teaching assistant that guides the teacher through lessons.
Partnering with state governments to transform primary education, Sampark Foundation has implemented digital tools specifically designed for government schools to improve foundational learning while enhancing teaching effectiveness. These tools operate without internet connectivity, making them ideal for low-resource classrooms, and utilize videos, songs, stories, and real-time prompts to support teachers directly in the classroom.
Streamlined Teaching Across Maharashtra
Across Maharashtra, similar success stories are emerging from various regions. In Vidarbha, a teacher managing a multi-grade classroom with over 35 students has experienced significant improvements through structured lesson sequencing under the 'Sahi Kram, Sahi Dhang' pedagogy.
"Earlier, I spent too much time planning lessons. Now, I know exactly what to teach and how to teach it. I can focus my attention on the students instead of administrative tasks," the teacher explained.
At the ZP primary school in Mandovhal, located in Parner block of Ahilyanagar district, student absenteeism presented a major challenge before the intervention. With the introduction of Sampark Smart Device and Smart School App, classrooms became engaging and joyful learning environments.
Remarkable Improvements in Attendance and Participation
School teacher Eknath Londhe reported dramatic changes: "Attendance reached 100%, and student participation and curiosity increased significantly. Previously inactive students became confident learners. Students started enjoying learning, asking questions, and actively participating in classroom activities. Both teachers and parents observed a positive transformation. When learning becomes joyful, better attendance naturally follows."
Shravani Gaikwad, a Std IV student from Zilla Parishad Primary School in Sant Goroba, Kakanagar, Dharashiv, shared her experience: "Our class loves the songs by Sampark Didi. She teaches us in a simple way. We learn English words, solve mathematics problems, and listen to stories. Learning becomes enjoyable. The AI devices and tools have reduced our fear of mathematics and English subjects."
Government Support and Future Expansion
Principal secretary of the state education department Ranjit Singh Deol emphasized the strategic importance of this intervention: "Artificial intelligence can be a force multiplier when harnessed alongside effective pedagogy. Maharashtra welcomes the transformative role AI can play in advancing our vision for quality learning with robust digital infrastructure."
This intervention arrives at a critical juncture when primary school enrollment remains high but learning outcomes show significant variation. By reducing administrative burdens and providing structured, engaging content, teachers can reclaim valuable time for actual teaching activities.
Sampark Foundation is also deploying an AI-based, real-time classroom monitoring and governance platform, planned for rollout across 80,000 government schools throughout India. This no-cost platform will enable education officials at district, block, and school levels to:
- Track teaching data comprehensively
- Monitor classroom engagement metrics
- Predict learning outcomes through analytics
- Strengthen evidence-based decision-making
- Enhance accountability within the public education system
The transformation witnessed in Maharashtra's government schools demonstrates how technology, when thoughtfully implemented, can bridge educational gaps and create more equitable learning opportunities for all students.
