AIDSO Honors Jyotiba Phule's Legacy on 199th Birth Anniversary in Dharwad

Members of the All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) gathered in Dharwad on Sunday to pay heartfelt tributes to the eminent social reformer Jyotiba Phule on the occasion of his 199th birth anniversary. The event served as a poignant reminder of Phule's enduring contributions to social justice and educational equity in India.

Year-Long Celebrations Announced for Phule's Bicentenary

In a significant announcement, the organisation revealed plans for extensive year-long celebrations leading up to Phule's birth bicentenary in April 2027. These commemorative events are scheduled to take place across the entire district, aiming to amplify Phule's message of equality and access to education for all segments of society.

Shashikala Meti Highlights Phule's Pioneering Role in Education

Addressing the assembled gathering, AIDSO district secretary Shashikala Meti delivered a powerful speech focusing on Jyotiba Phule's instrumental role in social reform and education. She emphasized that Phule courageously fought against the entrenched caste system, which historically denied educational opportunities to marginalized communities. Meti underscored Phule's advocacy for universal education, urging the current government to ensure learning opportunities are accessible to every section of society without discrimination.

Meti recalled that Phule, along with his dedicated associates, established schools specifically for the underprivileged and persistently pressured the British administration to extend educational facilities to the children of impoverished farmers and laborers. Despite facing numerous hardships and societal resistance, Phule remained unwavering in his commitment, dedicating his entire life to promoting equality and driving social transformation through the powerful tool of education.

Criticism of Education Commercialization and School Closures

In a critical assessment of contemporary policies, Meti alleged that successive governments have strayed from the foundational ideals championed by leaders like Jyotiba Phule by increasingly commercializing education. She expressed deep concern over the state government's reported initiative to close a substantial number of government schools under the KPS Magnet scheme.

Meti highlighted that in Dharwad district alone, over 600 schools are reportedly facing imminent closure, a move that has already sparked protests in several villages. This situation, she argued, directly contradicts Phule's vision of accessible public education for all.

Call to Action: Strengthening Grassroots Movements

Speakers at the programme issued a strong call to action, urging participants to strengthen grassroots movements to safeguard public education and uphold the rich legacy of Jyotiba Phule. Participants collectively resolved to take Phule's transformative message directly to villages and intensify efforts to protect neighborhood schools from closure and neglect.

The event was attended by several notable figures, including Public Education Protection Committee president Mallesh Katagi, Veerabhadrayya Chikkamath, and members Hanumantu Unkal, Nagappa Eni, Ningappa, Sangappa, Shantesh, and Siddu, demonstrating broad community support for the cause.
