BBAU Lucknow Takes Proactive Step for Student Mental Health
Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) in Lucknow has made a significant decision to prioritize student well-being. The university will appoint contractual psychological counsellors specifically dedicated to supporting student mental health.
Comprehensive Counselling Services Launched
These professional counsellors will provide essential services to help students manage various challenges. The university will offer regular counselling sessions designed to address academic stress and examination pressure. Students can also seek help for personal issues through this confidential program.
BBAU spokesperson Rachna Gangwar explained the university's approach. "We are taking a positive, forward-thinking and sensitive initiative towards prioritising student mental health," she stated. "In line with the National Education Policy-2020 spirit, BBAU will now provide professional psychological counselling to help students cope with academic stress, examination pressure and personal challenges."
Structured Support System
The university has established a clear framework for this mental health initiative:
- Students will have access to three hours of psychological counselling twice weekly
- All counselling services will remain completely confidential
- The program will maintain a student-centric focus throughout
- Specific attention will address exam stress, career confusion, and personal problems
- Mental health awareness programs will be conducted as needed
Gangwar emphasized the broader impact of this initiative. "This step will not only boost students' confidence but also play a crucial role in making them balanced, capable and mentally strong for the future," she noted.
Implementation at Student Counselling Centre
The psychological counsellor will work from the university's student counselling centre called 'Umeed'. This dedicated space will serve as the primary location for all mental health support activities.
"We will be appointing a contractual psychological counsellor for student counselling," Gangwar confirmed regarding the staffing approach.
Qualification Requirements for Counsellors
The university has already conducted interviews for eligible candidates. BBAU has established specific qualification criteria for these positions:
- Candidates must possess a master's degree in psychology, clinical psychology, behavioural psychology, or mental health psychology
- Applicants should have a post-graduate diploma in counselling or a related field
- A minimum of two years of relevant work experience is required
- Candidates meeting these criteria will receive preference in the selection process
This comprehensive mental health initiative represents BBAU's commitment to creating a supportive educational environment. By addressing psychological well-being alongside academic development, the university aims to foster resilient, confident graduates prepared for future challenges.
