Delhi Government Announces Significant Boost in Higher Education Budget for 2026-27

The Delhi government has unveiled a substantial increase in funding for higher and technical education in its budget for the 2026-27 financial year. A total of Rs 720 crore has been earmarked for this sector, marking a notable rise of approximately 16.5% from the previous year's allocation of Rs 618 crore.

Education Sector Continues to Dominate Delhi's Budget Priorities

This allocation represents about 3.7% of the total education outlay of Rs 19,326 crore, which remains the largest share of Delhi's overall budget. The continued emphasis on education underscores the government's commitment to developing human capital and fostering academic excellence in the national capital.

The allocation for Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University (DPSRU) remains unchanged from the previous year.

Strategic Shift Toward Skill Development and Employment Creation

Presenting the budget, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized the government's focus on transforming Delhi's youth from "job seekers to job creators" through skill development and employment-oriented training. This strategic shift is reflected in several key initiatives:

  1. Development of Centers of Excellence across Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in Jahangirpuri, Dheerpur, Shahdara, Narela, and Nand Nagri.
  2. Expansion of ITI infrastructure in Shahdara, Pusa, and Jail Road.
  3. Allocation of Rs 100 crore for infrastructure development, including construction of new buildings at G B Pant Institute of Technology and various polytechnics.

Major Infrastructure Projects and Policy Innovations

The budget includes ambitious infrastructure projects and policy innovations designed to enhance Delhi's educational landscape:

  • Plans to develop an integrated Education City in Narela, with Rs 1,350 crore allocated for land acquisition.
  • Proposed expansion of Ambedkar University to accommodate growing student needs.
  • Introduction of a startup and incubation policy aimed at building an innovative ecosystem for youth entrepreneurship.
  • Launch of a talent hunt policy with an allocation of Rs 10 crore to identify and nurture exceptional abilities.
