Goa State Central Library Announces Major Expansion in South Goa

The Goa State Central Library has unveiled ambitious plans to significantly enhance public access to knowledge resources by establishing two new libraries in South Goa. This strategic expansion will bring modern library facilities to the communities of Baina and Curchorem, marking a substantial investment in educational infrastructure for the region.

Baina Library to Transform Ravindra Bhavan Space

In Baina, the new library will be strategically housed within the existing Ravindra Bhavan building, which is scheduled to undergo comprehensive renovation and expansion to meet the specific requirements of a contemporary public library facility. According to Sulaksha Kolmule, curator of the Goa State Central Library, the allocated space will receive extensive modifications to create an optimal environment for library operations.

"We are collaborating closely with the public works department to redesign the interior of Ravindra Bhavan specifically for library functions," Kolmule explained. "The architectural plans for the transformed space have been formally submitted, and we are currently progressing through the estimation and construction timeline development phases."

The library administration has established an ambitious timeline for this project, with the goal of completing all renovation work within the current calendar year. The Baina library is projected to become fully operational and ready to serve the public by the conclusion of 2026, providing residents with enhanced access to books, digital resources, and community programming.

Curchorem to Receive Purpose-Built Library Facility

Simultaneously, the government has initiated plans for a completely new library building in Curchorem, which will replace the current temporary rented premises. This purpose-built facility represents a long-term commitment to educational infrastructure in the area.

Kolmule confirmed that administrative processes are advancing steadily for the Curchorem project. "The official documentation for establishing the Curchorem library is actively progressing through the necessary channels," she stated. "We anticipate laying the foundation stone for this new building during the present financial year itself, marking a significant milestone in this development."

The dual-library initiative reflects the Goa State Central Library's broader mission to expand its reach and services throughout the state. These new facilities will provide:

  • Enhanced access to physical and digital reading materials
  • Modern study spaces for students and researchers
  • Community programming and educational workshops
  • Improved infrastructure for knowledge dissemination

This expansion represents one of the most significant developments in Goa's public library system in recent years, with both projects designed to serve growing community needs and foster greater literacy and learning opportunities across South Goa.
