Karnataka Governor Emphasizes AI's Impact and Cybercrime Dangers at University Convocation

Mangaluru: At the 44th Annual Convocation of Mangalore University, held at Mangalagangothri on Saturday, Karnataka Governor and University Chancellor Thaawar Chand Gehlot delivered a keynote address focusing on the dual nature of modern technological advancements. Governor Gehlot underscored that while artificial intelligence (AI) is driving a global transformation, it also brings significant risks, particularly in the form of escalating cybercrimes.

The Governor's Call for Caution and Skill Development

Governor Gehlot articulated that today's world is experiencing rapid changes fueled by continuous developments in science, technology, and innovation. He specifically pointed to AI, data science, geo-technology, and the digital revolution as areas presenting both new opportunities and formidable challenges. "Cybercrime is increasing through the misuse of modern technologies, and e-waste is causing damage to the environment," he warned, urging students to exercise vigilance.

He emphasized that theoretical knowledge alone is insufficient in this evolving landscape. "In such times, you will also have to develop practical skills, creative thinking, and problem-solving ability," Gehlot advised the graduating students. He expressed expectations from institutions like Mangalore University to partner in finding solutions and mitigating the broader societal impacts of these technologies.

Redefining Success and Encouraging Entrepreneurship

The governor offered profound advice on measuring success, stating, "Do not measure success by big packages or high positions, but assess its value on the basis of how many people's lives have been positively changed by your knowledge and work." He stressed that education gains true meaning only when its benefits permeate society.

Gehlot further encouraged innovation and entrepreneurship among the graduates. "Find solutions to problems through innovation, and create new employment opportunities through entrepreneurship. Instead of seeking jobs, you should strive to become job creators," he asserted, highlighting a shift from job-seeking to job creation as a critical pathway for the new generation.

MP Chowta Highlights Coastal Karnataka's Legacy of Excellence

Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, in his convocation address, celebrated the coastal region's proven track record of producing globally influential figures. "Satya Nadella, who studied engineering in the same ecosystem of coastal Karnataka, is the CEO of Microsoft. KV Kamath, who revolutionised modern banking, walked the same paths," he noted, illustrating how local talent has shaped international institutions.

Chowta described Dakshina Kannada as "an ocean of possibilities" and called upon young graduates to contribute to regional development. He urged them to build companies, laboratories, and institutions, raise standards, create jobs, and strengthen public life in the coastal region upon returning from experiences elsewhere in the world.

University Honors Local Icons

The MP congratulated Mangalore University for recognizing local luminaries by conferring honorary doctorates. The honorees included Padma Shri Harekala Hajabba and Raveesh Padumale, the first Daivanartaka to earn a PhD in Engineering. Additionally, the late Soorikumeru Govinda Bhat, renowned as the ‘Dashavatari' of Yakshagana, was selected for a posthumous honor, with the award to be presented at his house in Soorikumeru, Bantwal taluk, on April 13.

The convocation was attended by Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor PL Dharma, marking a significant event that blended academic celebration with forward-looking discourse on technology, society, and regional pride.
