Government Calls for Urgent Education Reform to Align with Economic Demands

Time Warp in Classrooms
At the inauguration of the Bharat Innovates Deep-Tech Pre-Summit on Saturday, Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi delivered a frank critique of the current educational framework. He emphasized that many classrooms remain trapped in an academic time warp, where curricula often mirror what educators themselves learned decades ago.
"The things which were changing over a period of 15 to 20 years, now they are changing in 15 to 20 months. Educators have to realise that," Joshi stated, highlighting the accelerated pace of knowledge evolution that demands immediate adaptation.
Beyond Incremental Updates
Joshi indicated that the Ministry of Education is advocating for more than just periodic syllabus revisions. The proposed reset aims to fundamentally rethink how knowledge is delivered, evaluated, and practically applied. This comprehensive approach seeks to bridge the widening gap between academic instruction and real-world economic requirements.
Deep-Tech Innovation as Catalyst
Principal Scientific Advisor Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood emphasized the critical role of deep-tech innovation in enhancing India's global competitiveness. He called for stronger collaboration between academic institutions, research ecosystems, and startup ventures to drive cutting-edge technological advancements.
Institutional Leadership and Startup Responsibility
IIT Bombay Board Chairman K Radhakrishnan urged startups to recognize their significant role in shaping the nation's future trajectory. "There is a thin line between national fame and national shame. Make India proud," he remarked, underscoring the societal impact of entrepreneurial ventures.
Department of Science and Technology Secretary Prof. Abhay Karandikar highlighted the pivotal responsibility of premier institutions like the IITs and IISc. "This is an interesting time for startups. This summit not only addresses the country's problems but also pushes us towards a globally competitive environment," he noted, positioning educational reform as essential for national progress.
