Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) is set to open a campus in Indonesia's first digital Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Singhasari, East Java. The announcement was made on July 7, 2026, by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan via a post on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a landmark moment in the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Details of the New Campus
The campus, named IIM Bangalore (Singhasari) Campus, will be located in the Singhasari SEZ, which is Indonesia's first digital SEZ. The initiative follows the model of King's College, London, which has also established a presence in the SEZ. The campus will offer management education and research programs, aligning with India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto jointly launched the campus. Minister Pradhan highlighted that this is a defining outcome of NEP 2020 and a major step in strengthening educational ties between the two nations.
Impact and Significance
The establishment of IIM Bangalore's campus in Indonesia is expected to enhance bilateral cooperation in higher education, promote cross-cultural exchange, and provide Indian management expertise to Southeast Asia. It also positions IIM Bangalore as a global player in management education, following King's College's footsteps.
According to the minister, the campus will contribute to the development of human resources in the digital economy sector. The Singhasari SEZ is focused on technology and innovation, making it an ideal location for an IIM campus.
Context and Future Plans
IIM Bangalore is one of India's premier management institutes, known for its academic excellence and research. The Indonesia campus is part of its international expansion strategy. Further details on programs, faculty, and admissions are expected to be announced soon.
