Tragic Incident at IIT-Delhi Campus
A first-year BTech student at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi) is suspected to have died by suicide on the campus on Thursday. The incident has sent shockwaves through the academic community and prompted a detailed police investigation.
Police Investigation and Initial Findings
According to authorities from the Kishangarh police station, they received information about the tragic event around 8:35 AM on Thursday. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered the body of the 19-year-old student in his room at the New Vindhyachal Apartments on the IIT-Delhi campus. A doctor from IIT-Delhi Hospital examined the student and declared him brought dead.
Preliminary investigation suggests that depression may have been a contributing factor to this heartbreaking incident. No suicide note was recovered from the location, adding complexity to the investigation.
Family Circumstances and Discovery
The student resided in the apartment with his mother, who had traveled to her native place in Rajasthan on March 10. She last spoke with her son over the phone on March 11 around 11 PM. When he failed to respond to her calls the following morning, concern grew among those nearby.
Another resident, with assistance from campus security staff, opened the room and discovered the youth had taken the extreme step. This sequence of events highlights the sudden nature of the tragedy and the isolation the student experienced at the time.
Official Procedures and Institutional Response
Crime and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) teams conducted thorough inspections of the scene. The student's father provided a statement to police, expressing no suspicion of foul play in his son's death. The body was subsequently sent to Safdarjung Hospital for a post-mortem examination before being handed over to the grieving family.
In response to the incident, the security officer of IIT-Delhi submitted a written complaint citing a Supreme Court judgment from March 24, 2025. This complaint requested registration of a First Information Report (FIR) and a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
A case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to abetment of suicide, has been registered against unknown persons. This legal step ensures a formal inquiry will examine all potential factors that may have contributed to the tragedy.
IIT-Delhi's Official Statement
In an official statement, IIT-Delhi expressed "deep sorrow over the tragic and untimely demise" of the student. The institute confirmed that Delhi Police are actively investigating the incident and emphasized their commitment to supporting the bereaved family.
"In this hour of grief, the institute stands with the bereaved family and is providing them all support," the statement added, reflecting the institution's recognition of the profound loss experienced by the student's loved ones.
Historical Context of Student Suicides at IIT-Delhi
This tragic event follows similar incidents at the institution in recent years, raising concerns about student mental health in high-pressure academic environments:
