IIT Madras Establishes Pioneering Centre for Spirituality and Science Research

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has officially launched a groundbreaking new academic initiative: the Centre for Advanced Research on Spirituality, Science and Society. This innovative centre aims to explore the profound intersection between spirituality, meditation practices, scientific inquiry, and societal impacts.

A Visionary Contribution from Distinguished Alumnus

The centre was made possible through a generous Rs. 5 Crore contribution from Sant Rajinder Singh ji Maharaj, a world-renowned spiritual leader and distinguished IIT Madras alumnus. He graduated from the institute in 1967 with a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering and currently serves as the spiritual head of Science of Spirituality (SOS), known in India as Sawan Kirpal Ruhani Mission, which operates more than 3,400 centres across 50 countries globally.

The formal inauguration ceremony took place on 10th March 2026 at the IIT Madras campus, attended by numerous dignitaries including Sant Rajinder Singh ji Maharaj, Mata Rita, leadership representatives from Science of Spirituality, Prof. V. Kamakoti (Director of IIT Madras), Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam (Dean of Alumni and Corporate Relations), Prof. Rajesh Kumar (Professor-in-charge for the Centre and Head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences), and Mr. Kaviraj Nair (CEO of the Office of Institutional Advancement).

Addressing Student Wellness and Holistic Development

Prof. V. Kamakoti emphasized the critical importance of this new centre, stating: "At IIT Madras, student wellness and mental health have always been a priority. Meditation and a spiritually grounded way of life play an important role in ensuring the wholesome growth of a student's mind, body, and soul. A centre dedicated to exploring the science of spirituality and its impact on society is therefore the need of the hour."

He further expressed gratitude for the partnership with Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj, noting that this generous contribution enables IIT Madras to take significant steps forward in this important research domain.

Research Themes and Academic Programs

The centre will focus on several key research areas including:

  • Meditation and human health
  • Physiological determinants of spiritual experiences
  • Architecture and spiritual spaces
  • Medicine and spirituality
  • Interdisciplinary spiritual research

Prof. Rajesh Kumar explained the centre's unique position within the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences: "The Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj Centre for Advanced Research on Spirituality, Science, and Society is a unique addition. Our programs have traditionally aimed at providing societal directions to scientific innovations. This centre will help us add personal and mental well-being to the core of technological innovations."

Comprehensive Educational Initiatives

The centre plans to implement several ambitious educational programs:

  1. Introducing academic programs around meditation and spirituality as elective courses
  2. Supporting PhD and Post-doctoral students working in related research areas
  3. Conducting conferences and workshops on spirituality and science themes
  4. Establishing a dedicated mind-body-soul laboratory for teaching, research, and meditation practice

A Legacy of Support and Visionary Leadership

Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj has been an active contributor to IIT Madras's progress over the years, supporting various institutional initiatives including Merit cum Means Scholarships, Chair Professorships, and the Heritage Centre. Speaking about the centre's vision, he remarked: "As global research continues to highlight the role of meditation in enhancing focus, efficiency, and overall well-being, it is important to recognize that its true purpose goes beyond measurable benefits. Meditation helps individuals understand their true selves, experience inner peace, and foster deeper harmony in their relationships with others."
