IIT Roorkee Offers 8 Free Online Certificate Courses

The Educational Multimedia Research Centre at IIT Roorkee has taken a significant step to enhance learning opportunities. They have launched eight completely free online certificate courses. These courses span six months and target learners specifically in Uttarakhand and western Uttar Pradesh.

Course Details and Registration

These courses are available for the January to June semester. Interested individuals must register by February 28. The program covers a diverse range of subjects to cater to various interests.

  • Introduction to Film Studies
  • Indian Classical Literature
  • Coordination Chemistry
  • States of Matter and Chemical Kinetics
  • Hindi Bhasha Evam Sampreshan
  • Hindi Vyakaran Aur Sampreshan
  • Educational Administration
  • Academic Writing

Successful completion of any course leads to a certificate. From April onward, enrolled learners can apply to take examinations. These exams follow a credit-based evaluation system.

Initiative Background and Collaboration

The Ministry of Education directs this initiative through its SWAYAM platform. EMRC Roorkee implements it locally. There are twenty EMRCs across India. The IIT Roorkee centre specifically serves Uttarakhand and western Uttar Pradesh.

Several prestigious institutions collaborated to develop these courses. Partners include IIT Roorkee itself, Doon University Dehradun, and the University of Baroda. Rohilkhand University, Gurukul Kangri University Haridwar, Sri Dev Suman University, and HNB Garhwal University also contributed.

Accessibility and Director's Statement

Shruti Bhardwaj, the director of EMRC Roorkee, emphasized the courses' accessibility. "These are skill-based online courses with no age or eligibility criteria," she stated. "While some basic knowledge may be recommended for certain subjects, anyone can enrol and appear for the examination."

This move aims to democratize education. It removes traditional barriers, allowing a wider audience to gain valuable skills and certifications.
