Jharkhand Government Unveils Comprehensive Student Support Initiative
In a significant move to bolster higher education, the Jharkhand state government has announced plans to establish multifunctional student resource centers (SRCs) and digitize libraries at all universities. This initiative aims to assist students in preparing for competitive exams and campus interviews, while also supporting their regular academic curriculum.
Round-the-Clock Access and Modernization Efforts
The department budget statement, passed by the state assembly during the recent budget session, outlines that the SRCs will operate 24/7, offering students the flexibility to study according to their schedules. These centers are designed to provide dedicated study spaces to enhance focus and academic performance. Out of the 283 SRCs planned across the state, 254 have already been established, with plans to modernize these existing facilities to meet contemporary standards.
One-Point Information Hub for Students
Rahul Purwar, principal secretary of the higher education department, emphasized that the SRCs will serve as a centralized information hub. Students can access details on new courses, placement opportunities, and other college activities. Additionally, the centers will offer resume-building support for various placements and internship programs. Purwar noted that students' unions will hold meetings at these SRCs, and digital libraries will be accessible from these locations. A common service center within the SRCs will facilitate digital services such as railway ticket bookings and other online activities.
Positive Reception from Educational Leaders
R K Sharma, principal of Doranda College, praised the SRC initiative, highlighting its potential benefits for students, particularly those from middle or lower socioeconomic backgrounds. He stated, "The SRC is a good initiative as it would be helpful for students, especially those coming from the middle or lower strata of society." This endorsement underscores the project's aim to promote inclusivity and equal access to educational resources.
Digital Library Upgrades and Academic Enhancement
The budget also includes provisions to automate and upgrade all libraries in state universities and affiliate colleges, transforming them into fully functional digital libraries. According to the government plan, this initiative will enable seamless digital access to academic resources, research databases, e-books, and institutional repositories. The goal is to strengthen the academic and research ecosystem in Jharkhand, fostering a more robust learning environment for students and faculty alike.
