Low Nomination Turnout for Patna University Student Union Polls

Patna University Student Union Elections Witness Minimal Nomination Activity

In a surprising development, the nomination process for the upcoming Patna University Student Union (PUSU) elections saw a sluggish start, with only a single candidate submitting papers on Monday. This occurred despite the Patna University administration having made extensive arrangements and distributing 336 nomination forms to prospective contestants.

Election Schedule and Key Details

Voting for the PUSU elections is set to take place on February 28, covering a total of 27 positions. These include five crucial office-bearer roles and 22 council member seats. According to PU chief election officer Shankar Kumar, the nomination window remains open for two additional days, on Tuesday and Wednesday, allowing more candidates to enter the fray.

The election timeline is as follows:

  • Scrutiny of nominations: March 20
  • Withdrawal of candidature: February 19
  • Polling: February 28, from 8 AM to 2 PM at 42 booths across 14 zones
  • Counting of votes: Immediately after polling concludes, with results expected late in the evening

Political Engagement and Campaign Efforts

Student organizations aligned with various political parties have already committed to participating in the elections by fielding candidates for key posts. These groups have initiated canvassing activities to mobilize voter support and build momentum for their respective nominees.

To facilitate voter engagement, a presidential debate has been organized for February 25 at 1 PM at Patna Women’s College. All contenders for the PUSU president position will present their agendas during this event. Notably, Patna Women’s College holds the largest voter base among the participating institutions, making it a critical battleground in the election.

The low initial nomination turnout raises questions about student participation and the overall enthusiasm for the union elections, despite the structured preparations by university authorities.
