Lucknow University Students Stage Protest Over Mosque Sealing During Ramadan
In a significant development at Lucknow University, numerous students organized a protest demonstration outside the historic Lal Baradari on Sunday. The protest was a direct response to the controversial sealing of the mosque located within the university premises during the sacred month of Ramadan.
Community Outcry Over Timing and Lack of Communication
The decision by the university's works department to seal the mosque has generated substantial concern and distress among both students and faculty members who regularly utilize the facility for daily prayers. Many individuals within the academic community have openly questioned both the timing of this action and its overall necessity, particularly given the religious significance of the period.
Arafat Zafar, an associate professor in the Arabic department at Lucknow University, expressed profound disappointment, stating, "The sealing of the Lal Baradari Mosque was especially difficult as it occurred during Ramadan. This is a time when the mosque traditionally sees increased numbers of devotees and holds special religious importance for the Muslim community on campus."
Student Perspectives on the Controversial Decision
Taukeel Gazi, a student at Lucknow University, emphasized that sealing the mosque during Ramadan deeply affected those who depend on it for their prayers. He highlighted that implementing such a measure without providing any prior notice to the university community created widespread disappointment and contributed to growing unrest among students and staff.
Another student, Shubham Kharwar, stressed the importance of proper consultation and communication. He asserted, "The university administration should have engaged in discussions with students before executing this decision. Transparent communication could have potentially prevented the situation from escalating into a public protest and might have addressed community concerns more effectively."
Official Response Citing Structural Safety Concerns
In response to the growing controversy, Shyamlesh Tiwari, superintendent of the works department, provided clarification regarding the sealing. He explained, "The barricading and sealing of the Lal Baradari Mosque were carried out in strict compliance with official instructions issued by the university registrar. This action was taken because the mosque's structure has been assessed as weak and potentially hazardous, with risks of collapse at any moment. All measures implemented were in accordance with the specific directions provided to our department."
Background on Lal Baradari Restoration Project
This incident occurs against the backdrop of a significant restoration initiative. In March 2024, the over 200-year-old Lal Baradari structure, situated at the heart of the Lucknow University campus, received official approval for comprehensive restoration. A substantial budget of Rs 5 crore has been allocated specifically for this preservation project, highlighting the historical importance of the site.
The current protest underscores the delicate balance between necessary structural safety measures and respecting religious practices during significant periods. It also raises important questions about administrative communication protocols and community engagement within educational institutions.
