The department of zoology has tasked MSc first-year students specializing in animal behaviour and chronobiology with a unique assignment: to produce memes and reels that illustrate fascinating aspects of animal behavior. Students Turn Animal Kingdom into Viral Content

Students have enthusiastically embraced the assignment, transforming complex zoological concepts into creative and humorous content. They have captured visuals in university gardens, filmed reels at home, and even role-played as birds and insects to depict behaviors accurately. This hands-on approach combines fun with rigorous academic learning, encouraging deeper engagement with the subject matter.

Examples of Student Creations

One standout example involves seahorses, where males are known to give birth. Students created a video where a female seahorse asks, "What can you do for me in love?" and the male replies, "Have babies for you." This clever portrayal highlights the unique reproductive roles in this species.

Another project focused on grasshoppers, illustrating the technique of mate guarding. In this behavior, small male grasshoppers ride on the backs of larger females to prevent rivals from fertilizing them, especially during peak breeding seasons when competition is intense. Students created a meme titled "My girl on a bar's night out" to humorously depict this strategy.

The crown jewel of the assignments is a reel about cuckoo birds, showcasing their parasitic nesting behavior. The video depicts the cuckoo's takeover strategy: snatching a nest, hogging all the food, and kicking out the original eggs. This reel effectively communicates how the tiny intruder grows rapidly in a host nest, offering a villainous twist that makes the learning process entertaining.

Professor Geetanjali Mishra Explains the Rationale

Professor Geetanjali Mishra of the zoology department, who spearheaded this assignment with guidance from assistant professor Aakansha Sharma and professor Shalie Malik, explained the inspiration behind it. "We often see memes and reels related to animal behavior online, so we thought, why not assign students to create their own?" she said. "This idea builds on our past efforts to make education more interactive and technology-driven."

Positive Response and Educational Benefits

The response from students has been overwhelmingly positive. Professor Mishra added, "Students are engaging with the material deeply. Creating content requires them to research accurately, understand the behavior thoroughly, and then communicate it visually. It's a perfect blend of education, creativity, and technology."

Payal Chaudhary, an MSc first-year student, shared her experience: "It was challenging at first, but the research helped me understand things better. Adding humor made it fun, and creating a meme was hilarious. Figuring out a funny way to show what I learned made the lessons stick in my mind better than any textbook could."

This internal assignment carries significant academic weight, with 25 marks allocated for the content creation and an additional 5 marks for attendance.
