Microsoft Chooses India as First Asian Nation for Major AI Educator Initiative
In a significant development for educational technology, Microsoft has designated India as the inaugural country in Asia to implement its comprehensive Elevate for Educators program. This ambitious initiative is designed to equip two million teachers with advanced artificial intelligence skills and extend AI education to 200,000 schools across the nation by the year 2030.
Official Announcement at Delhi School Event
The formal unveiling occurred on Thursday at the CM Shri School located on Pandara Road in New Delhi, where Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith made the pivotal announcement. Demonstrating immediate implementation, all 75 CM Shri schools within Delhi will adopt the program from its inception, setting a precedent for nationwide rollout.
Aligning with National Education Policy Curriculum Changes
The launch timing is strategically synchronized with India's educational reforms. Beginning this academic year, Artificial Intelligence and Computational Thinking will become integrated components of the school curriculum starting from Grade 3, as mandated by the National Education Policy 2020. The Elevate for Educators program serves as a preparatory framework, ensuring teachers receive essential training before these new subjects are introduced to students—prioritizing educator readiness before classroom implementation.
Three-Pronged Program Structure
The initiative operates through three distinct yet interconnected tracks:
- Educator Credentials: New certification programs aligned with a national AI Literacy Framework, encompassing teachers across diverse educational institutions including schools, polytechnics, and colleges.
- Peer Learning Community: Establishment of a collaborative network comprising two million educators, featuring a progressive achievement model to encourage continuous professional development.
- Physical Infrastructure Development: Creation of AI Ambassadors, Educator Academies, and Centers of Excellence across 25,000 institutions nationwide, supplemented by integration with existing platforms like DIKSHA and the Skill India Digital Hub.
Strong Institutional Partnerships
Microsoft has secured collaboration with numerous prominent educational bodies, including the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), and the Directorate General of Training, alongside various state education and skilling departments. This collective effort is projected to impact approximately eight million students spanning school, vocational, and higher education sectors.
Emphasis on Teacher-Led AI Literacy
Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia, emphasized the program's fundamental philosophy during the announcement. He articulated that while AI skills are increasingly crucial, their true value emerges only when individuals can apply them with both confidence and sound judgment. Chandok stressed that this foundational capability originates with educators, making teacher training the critical first step in building national AI competency.
With India's educational landscape comprising nearly ten million educators and over two hundred million students, Microsoft recognizes this demographic not merely as impressive scale but as the central rationale for selecting India as the program's Asian launchpad.
