Rahul Gandhi Takes on Modi Over TMC Merger Allegations
In a fiery exchange, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of orchestrating a merger of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Speaking at a press conference, Gandhi claimed that the Modi government was using central agencies to pressure TMC leaders into joining the BJP, a tactic he termed 'Operation Tiger'. He further alleged that several TMC MPs were in talks with the BJP, signaling a potential shift in West Bengal's political landscape.
Abhishek Banerjee Denies Merger Rumors
Responding swiftly, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee dismissed the allegations as baseless. He accused the Congress of spreading misinformation to divert attention from its own internal crises. Banerjee asserted that the TMC remains united under Mamata Banerjee's leadership and that no such merger is on the cards. He challenged Gandhi to provide evidence of his claims, calling them a desperate attempt to destabilize the TMC.
Political Reactions and Implications
The war of words has intensified political tensions ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra refuted Gandhi's claims, labeling them as 'false and malicious'. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut expressed concern over the alleged political maneuvers, warning that such tactics could undermine democratic processes. The NCPI also weighed in, urging both parties to focus on developmental issues rather than engaging in mudslinging.
Political analysts suggest that the Congress's attack on the TMC is part of a broader strategy to regain lost ground in West Bengal, where the party has been marginalized since the 2011 assembly elections. The TMC, on the other hand, is keen to project itself as a strong regional force capable of countering the BJP's national agenda. With the Lok Sabha polls approaching, this confrontation is likely to shape electoral alliances and voter sentiments.
