Nagpur University Gets Full-Time Pro-Vice Chancellor After Delay

Nagpur University (NU) has finally appointed Akhilesh Peshwe as its full-time pro-vice chancellor, ending a prolonged vacancy that had persisted since September 2024. The appointment, made on Monday, received approval from the university's management council after careful deliberation.

Background of the Vacancy

The post of pro-vice chancellor had remained unfilled for several months. During this interim period, pharmaceutical sciences professor Rajendra Kakde and physics professor Subhash Kondawar served as in-charge pro-vice chancellors. They worked under acting vice chancellors Prashant Bokare and Madhavi Chawre, both of whom held additional charge responsibilities.

Appointment Process

Following the assumption of office by Vice Chancellor Manali Kshirsagar in December 2025, expectations were high for a swift appointment. However, the selection process encountered delays as the university had to evaluate a pool of over 35 candidates proposed by various academic and political groups.

Vice Chancellor Kshirsagar explained that the selection required thorough assessment of each candidate's merit and performance in their current roles. "It was not possible to rush the decision," she stated. She further noted that the process might have been expedited had the chosen candidate come from her own engineering background.

Strategic Choice

Observers view Peshwe's appointment as a strategic move, given his extensive academic experience and deep familiarity with conventional university systems. This comes at a critical time when Nagpur University is grappling with examination-related challenges and the need to conduct summer exams efficiently.

Priorities and Vision

In his new role, Peshwe emphasized that his primary focus would be on implementing the vice chancellor's vision and streamlining the examination system. An English literature academic by training, he brings over 30 years of teaching experience to the position. Since 2016, he has served as the principal of Dharampeth Science College.

The appointment is expected to bring stability to the university's leadership and address long-standing administrative issues. With Peshwe's expertise, Nagpur University aims to enhance its academic governance and overcome current operational hurdles.
