NEET Topper Jiya Daki Dies by Suicide in Ahmedabad Hostel, Leaves Heartbreaking Note
In a tragic incident that has shocked the medical education community, Jiya Daki, a 19-year-old first-year MBBS student at BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad, was found dead in her hostel room on Monday afternoon. The young student, who had successfully cracked the highly competitive National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) to secure a seat at one of Gujarat's most prestigious medical institutions, died by suicide, leaving behind a three-page handwritten note addressed to her parents.
A Promising Career Cut Short
Jiya Daki, a resident of Keshod in Junagadh, had moved into Room 527 of the Devi Girls' Hostel in Shahibaug, Ahmedabad, approximately five months ago. According to police inspector J H Sindhav, she was regular in attending classes and had no recent or upcoming exams that could have contributed to academic pressure. Friends and authorities described her as an introvert who struggled to connect with others, often feeling isolated in her new environment.
The note found in her room revealed deep emotional distress, with Daki referring to herself as a "failure" and expressing feelings of loneliness and an inability to make friends. Inspector Sindhav confirmed that she did not blame anyone else for her decision, indicating that this was a personal struggle she faced silently.
College Authorities Express Shock
College officials expressed profound surprise at the tragedy, noting that Daki had achieved high scores in NEET to earn her place at BJ Medical College, an institution known for its rigorous admissions process. "It is surprising that a girl who scored so well in NEET called herself a failure," they stated, highlighting the contrast between her academic success and her perceived personal shortcomings.
On Monday, when Daki did not attend classes and no movement was detected from her room, college authorities were alerted. They discovered her hanging inside, leading to immediate police involvement. Her elder sister, who lives in Gandhinagar, was informed and rushed to the hospital, later taking Daki's body to their hometown after a postmortem examination.
Police Investigation Underway
The Shahibaug police have registered a case of accidental death and are conducting a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances leading up to the suicide. Inspector Sindhav mentioned that Daki's roommate and classmates will be questioned to gain insights into her state of mind. Additionally, police plan to examine her mobile phone for any clues, though initial findings suggest no apparent reason beyond her sensitive and introverted nature.
This incident underscores the pressing need for mental health support systems in educational institutions, especially for students transitioning to demanding professional courses like medicine. As the community mourns the loss of a bright young life, it serves as a stark reminder of the hidden struggles many students face behind academic achievements.
