The Patna University (PU) senate convened on Saturday under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Ajay Kumar Singh to pass a deficit budget amounting to Rs 498 crore for the financial year 2026-27. This budget is now set to be forwarded to the state government for integration into the annual state budget.
Budget Details Presented
Kameshwar Pandit, the Dean of Students' Welfare, presented the budget during the meeting. He outlined that the university's estimated expenditure stands at Rs 535 crore, while income from various sources is projected at only Rs 36 crore. The remaining expenditure is anticipated to be covered through grants from multiple departments, including the education department, science and technology department, directorate of distance education, and vocational courses.
New Courses Approved
The senate also gave its approval to admission ordinances and examination regulations for two new academic programs scheduled to commence from the next academic session. These include a postgraduate course in forensic science and a Bachelor of Arts program in human resource management specifically designed for ex-servicemen.
Resolution for Karpoori Thakur Chair
In a unanimous decision, the senate passed a resolution advocating for the establishment of an academic chair at Patna University named after Bharat Ratna Karpoori Thakur. This move aims to honor the legacy of the former Chief Minister of Bihar.
Demands Raised by Teachers and Students
During the meeting, faculty members raised concerns regarding the notification of pending promotions. Meanwhile, students urged for regular interaction sessions with the vice-chancellor and called for the timely resolution of their grievances.
