Patna's Astro Park: A New Frontier in Interactive Science Education

Patna is set to revolutionize science learning for young minds with the launch of a groundbreaking 'Astro Park' at the Indira Gandhi Science Complex, commonly known as the planetarium. This innovative outdoor space is designed to transform complex scientific concepts into fun, hands-on experiences, making astronomy and physics accessible and exciting for children through interactive play and discovery.

Interactive Exhibits to Spark Curiosity

The Astro Park will feature 11 interactive science models, fabricated and installed by the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) from Kolkata. Two of these exhibits, the 'Human Sundial' and the 'Vertical Sundial', have already been set up, with the remaining models expected to arrive and be installed soon. In the Human Sundial, children become active participants by standing at marked positions based on the date, using their own shadows as pointers to tell time. This engaging activity helps them grasp how the Earth's rotation and tilt create day and night in a personal, lively manner. The nearby Vertical Sundial demonstrates how the sun's position can accurately indicate time through carefully angled surfaces and shadows.

Project Details and Development

Shiv Shankar Sahay, nodal officer of the project, revealed that the Astro Park is being developed in the open park area in front of the guest house at the complex. "Civil work, including basement preparation, has been completed for the installation of all exhibits. Equipment for the exhibits is being imported from Kolkata, and models will be constructed using rods, steel, fibre, and other suitable materials depending on their design," he explained. The entire project, costing Rs 32 lakh, commenced six months ago and is anticipated to be finished within the next three months.

Diverse Range of Exhibits

Beyond the sundials, the park will include equatorial and interactive sundial exhibits. Other highlights being prepared are:

  • A display titled 'Our Astronomers', featuring photographs and contributions of scientists along with quiz questions to test knowledge.
  • An interactive model explaining 'Kepler's Laws', where children can rotate elliptical paths and measure equal areas swept by planets, making abstract laws tangible.
  • Exhibits such as 'Light and Spectrum Analyzer', 'Our Solar System', a 'Gravity Well' that visually illustrates how massive objects bend space and light, and 'Stars and Distance' and 'Zodiac Circle', which highlight constellations, star patterns, and the basis for astrological sun signs.

Enhancing Family Engagement and Science Outreach

Sahay emphasized that the park will provide an engaging space for families to spend quality time together while children explore scientific concepts through hands-on experiences. This initiative complements recent upgrades at the planetarium, which include an advanced dome screen with 3D 8K laser projection and an interactive Space and Astronomy Gallery on the first floor, along with facilities like a cafeteria. Additionally, a mobile Science Bus was launched earlier to bring science education to remote villages free of cost, further extending the reach of scientific learning in the region.

The Astro Park represents a significant step forward in making science education interactive and enjoyable, aiming to inspire the next generation of scientists and thinkers in Patna and beyond.
