PPU to Set Up 16 New Colleges in Patna, Nalanda

Patliputra University Announces Major Expansion with 16 New Rural Colleges

In a significant move to democratize higher education access, Patliputra University (PPU) has unveiled plans to establish 16 new degree colleges at the block level across Patna and Nalanda districts. This ambitious initiative specifically targets rural areas where students have historically faced substantial barriers in pursuing academic aspirations due to geographical constraints and limited infrastructure.

Strategic Distribution and Implementation Timeline

According to PPU Vice-Chancellor Upendra Prasad Singh, the distribution will see nine colleges opened in Nalanda district and seven in Patna district. "This decision aligns perfectly with state government guidelines aimed at strengthening higher education infrastructure in underserved regions," Singh emphasized. The university plans to commence academic operations in the next academic session starting July 2026.

Academic Structure and Initial Offerings

While the new institutions will eventually offer teaching across 16 diverse subjects, the initial phase will focus on six core disciplines. "In the first phase, classes will begin with history, political science, sociology, Hindi, English, and economics," the VC detailed. This phased approach ensures quality implementation while meeting immediate educational needs.

Infrastructure and Staffing Strategy

PPU Dean of Students' Welfare Rajeev Ranjan revealed that each college will eventually require one principal, 32 teachers, and 12 non-teaching staff for optimal functioning. However, to facilitate immediate commencement, the university will initially rely on guest faculty appointments until permanent recruitment is completed. "These colleges will initially operate from existing Intermediate school buildings at block level to ensure academic activities begin without unnecessary delays," Ranjan explained.

Broader State-Level Educational Expansion

This initiative coincides with broader state government plans for higher education sector expansion. Sources indicate the government is preparing for a large-scale recruitment drive that will appoint approximately 7,000 assistant professors and nearly 2,000 non-teaching staff in coming years. These appointments will support not only PPU's new colleges but also expansion across other universities and colleges throughout Bihar.

Existing Infrastructure and Future Vision

Currently, Patliputra University oversees 26 constituent colleges and 55 affiliated BEd colleges spread across Patna and Nalanda districts. PPU Registrar Abu Bakar highlighted the transformative potential of the new block-level institutions. "These colleges will significantly improve the gross enrolment ratio in higher education and create unprecedented opportunities for students from rural backgrounds," Bakar stated.

Looking ahead, the university is developing plans to introduce degree-level vocational courses in these proposed colleges, further diversifying educational offerings and enhancing employability prospects for graduates. This comprehensive approach addresses both access and quality dimensions of higher education reform in rural Bihar.
