Telangana Announces New Job-Focused Academic Programs to Counter IT Slowdown

In response to the ongoing slowdown in the information technology sector, the state of Telangana is preparing to launch a series of innovative, employment-oriented academic courses starting from the 2026–27 academic year. The proposed programs will include specialized fields such as maritime technology, air traffic management, and defence and security studies.

Expanding Educational Horizons

The courses will be available at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, integrated into Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Master of Arts (MA), and Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs. These will be offered across degree and postgraduate colleges throughout the state.

"We are going to introduce several unique and innovative courses that have strong employment potential in emerging sectors," stated V Balakista Reddy, chairman of the Telangana Council of Higher Education. He emphasized that the initiative aims to create skilled human resources in sectors currently experiencing a shortage of trained professionals.

Proposed Course Offerings

The council has outlined a diverse range of programs designed to meet industry demands. Key offerings include:

  • BBA in Maritime Technology, Maritime Commerce, and Maritime Management
  • BBA in Airport, Airspace, and Air Traffic Management
  • BA in Land, Agriculture, and Rural Development
  • BA in Defence and Security

To ensure the courses are well-structured and relevant, the council will conduct a large-scale online consultation on Tuesday, involving nearly 5,000 stakeholders. This feedback-gathering session is crucial for finalizing the framework before the official rollout.

Emphasis on Practical Learning and Industry Collaboration

Officials have confirmed that the new programs will prioritize a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical exposure. Internships will be mandatory, with colleges required to establish partnerships with relevant industries to provide students with hands-on experience during their studies.

"Institutions offering these courses must tie up with industry partners to ensure internships and placement support for students," Balakista Reddy explained. He added that the council will supply learning materials and facilitate access to expert resource persons to support the programs.

Challenges and Calls for Sustainability

Despite the positive reception from college managements, concerns have been raised about the long-term viability of these new courses. College authorities have urged the council to develop a sustainable roadmap to ensure continuity, even amid changes in leadership at the council or university level.

"Several courses introduced in the past failed to take off due to lack of continuity once officials' tenures ended," noted B Suryanarayana Reddy, president of the Telangana Private Degree and PG Colleges Management Association. He highlighted current struggles, such as difficulties in securing internships for final-year BA logistics students, and noted that previously popular courses like BSc Data Science and Biotechnology now have limited enrollment.

Management representatives have welcomed the introduction of new programs but stressed that sustained policy support and clear academic pathways are essential to maintain student interest and ensure meaningful career opportunities. They argue that without these measures, the courses may not achieve their intended impact in addressing skill gaps and boosting employment in emerging sectors.
