Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge on Saturday clarified that there is no need for bars and pubs to check the identification documents of all customers. The clarification comes amid confusion over a recent circular issued by Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG&IGP) M A Saleem.
Clarification on Circular
The circular had reportedly directed establishments to verify IDs of patrons, leading to concerns among business owners and patrons. However, Kharge stated that the directive was not meant to be applied universally. 'There is no need to check IDs of all customers. The circular was specific and not a blanket order,' he said.
Reaction from Industry
Bar and pub owners had expressed confusion over the implementation of the circular, fearing harassment and loss of business. The minister's clarification has brought relief to the hospitality sector. 'We welcome the clarification. It ensures that businesses can operate without unnecessary hurdles,' said a representative from the Karnataka State Hotels and Restaurants Association.
Background
The DG&IGP's circular was issued earlier this week, sparking debate over privacy and regulatory overreach. Kharge's statement aims to allay fears and provide clear guidelines. The government will issue a formal clarification to all districts soon.
