In a significant move to preserve linguistic harmony, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has issued a comprehensive directive mandating that all employees must ensure the Kannada language receives proper respect across all colleges under its jurisdiction. The administrative language of Karnataka must not face any form of disrespect, according to the university's official circular dated March 24.

The circular explicitly places personal responsibility on all principals and heads of colleges to maintain both respect for the language and overall harmony within their institutions. Should any violations be discovered, disciplinary action will be initiated against the staff members involved. The guidelines specifically prohibit teaching and non-teaching staff from using derogatory or inappropriate words about Kannada while communicating with students or others.
This proactive measure comes directly in response to a formal letter from the Kannada Development Authority, which urged the university to take concrete steps to ensure linguistic harmony. VTU Vice-Chancellor Prof S Vidyashankar emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "VTU oversees 220 affiliated colleges with approximately 3 lakh students, including those from different states and countries. We are committed to ensuring that Kannada is not disrespected."

Prof Vidyashankar further explained, "Since some unpleasant incidents have occurred recently, we have issued these precautionary guidelines specifically designed to prevent such situations from arising again." The university previously faced controversy when a warden at a private engineering college hostel was allegedly captured on video instructing students not to speak in Kannada, suggesting they should only use the language at home. This video went viral, highlighting the need for formal protection of the state language.
