5 Key Scholarships at IIT Roorkee: Merit, Means & Support for Disadvantaged Students
IIT Roorkee Scholarships: Financial Aid for Students

The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) provides a robust framework of financial aid programs designed to support its diverse student body. These scholarships play a crucial role in shaping academic journeys by alleviating the burden of educational expenses, either through tuition fee waivers or direct monetary assistance. Operating within the institute's highly competitive environment, these schemes ensure that financial constraints do not hinder talent. Here is a detailed look at five significant scholarships available at IIT Roorkee, based on the institute's current guidelines.

Merit-Based and Need-Based Financial Support

The Merit cum Means Scholarship is a cornerstone program for undergraduate and Master of Science (MSc) students. It is open to candidates enrolled in BTech, BArch, Integrated Dual Degree (IDD), Integrated MTech (IMT), Integrated MSc (IMS), BS-MS, and MSc programs. Eligible students receive a minimum of Rs 1,000 per month for ten months annually. Additionally, BTech students get a refund of their remaining tuition fees.

To qualify, applicants must belong to the General, General (EWS), or Other Backward Class (OBC) categories with a family income not exceeding Rs 5 lakh per annum. Academic performance is key; beneficiaries must maintain a CGPA and YGPA of 7.00, clear all registered courses, and have a clean disciplinary record. First-year entrants are exempt from the CGPA requirement initially. The scholarship is awarded to up to 25% of the class strength and is valid for the normal duration of the program, covering only the first four years for IDD courses.

Scholarships for Academic Excellence and Science Pursuits

The James Thomason Scholarship rewards academic excellence at the point of entry. It is automatically awarded to students admitted to BTech, BArch, IDD, IMT, IMS, and BS-MS programs through the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) who secure an All India Rank (AIR) of up to 250 in the most recent JEE (Advanced).

The INSPIRE Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE), managed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), supports students in science streams. Eligibility is broad, extending to those in the top 1% of their Class 12 board exams or those with qualifying ranks in national tests like JEE (Main), JEE (Advanced), NEET, or KVPY. For renewal at IIT Roorkee, Integrated MSc students in Mathematics, Chemistry, or Physics must have a parental income under Rs 5 lakh and must have previously held the scholarship. First-year BS-MS and MSc/Integrated MSc candidates are eligible if they held an AIR up to 10,000 in JEE (Advanced 2021) or JAM 2022.

Targeted Support for Financially Constrained and Disadvantaged Students

The Dr S K Goel and Mrs Kusum Goel Scholarship, launched in 2022, offers substantial aid to financially constrained undergraduate students. Each selected candidate receives Rs 2 lakh per year. The institute will add one new student annually until 2025, after which four students will be supported each year. The scholarship continues for the four-year BTech program if the student maintains a CGPA of 7.5. It is open to first-year BTech students from General and OBC categories with a family income between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 6 lakh.

The Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students Pursuing Engineering Education provides an annual award of $1,000 to two undergraduate students each year. It is renewable for four years if a CGPA of 7.0 is maintained. Notably, at least one award is reserved for an eligible female student. Applicants must be first-year BTech students from General or OBC categories who are already receiving a two-thirds tuition fee waiver and are not beneficiaries of any other similar scholarship.

Beyond these five, IIT Roorkee hosts additional foundation-led schemes like the Sharman Foundation scholarship to widen its support net. Prospective and current students are strongly advised to verify all details, including the latest eligibility criteria and application procedures, directly through the official IIT Roorkee website before applying.
