Ahmedabad Engineering Admissions Witness Alarming Drop in Second Round
The second round of admissions for degree engineering courses in Ahmedabad has recorded a disappointingly low response from aspiring students, raising serious concerns among educational authorities and college managements across the city.
Degree Engineering Seats Remain Largely Vacant
Out of a total of 21,363 seats available in self-financed degree engineering colleges, a mere 291 seats were occupied during this admission cycle. The situation appears even more dire in government and grant-in-aid engineering institutions, where only two seats were taken from an available pool of 372 seats.
Diploma Engineering Admissions Show Slightly Better Figures
While degree courses struggled to attract candidates, diploma engineering admissions presented a somewhat improved scenario. Government diploma colleges managed to enroll fourteen students, while private diploma engineering institutions admitted 254 students. This brings the total number of occupied diploma engineering seats to 268, though these numbers still fall significantly short of expectations.
Education Authorities Express Growing Concern
Education officials and college administrators have voiced their increasing worry about the steadily declining admission numbers in engineering programs. The combined figures reveal that only 561 engineering seats (both degree and diploma) were filled during this admission round, representing a tiny fraction of available opportunities.
Experts Identify Multiple Contributing Factors
Educational analysts and industry experts point to several interconnected reasons behind this sharp downward trend in engineering admissions:
- Limited employment prospects for engineering graduates in current market conditions
- Growing preference for alternative career paths among students and parents
- Significant migration of students to other professional courses and disciplines
- Changing perceptions about engineering education and its return on investment
- Increased competition from emerging fields and specialized vocational programs
This worrying pattern of declining engineering admissions has become increasingly evident across Gujarat state, with Ahmedabad's figures reflecting a broader regional trend that demands immediate attention from policymakers and educational institutions alike.
