AMU Engineering Students Arrested for Allegedly Calling Campus 'Mini Pakistan' and Threatening Doctor
In a disturbing incident at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), two engineering students have been arrested and sent to jail for allegedly referring to the prestigious institution as "mini Pakistan" and threatening a 25-year-old doctor who was visiting the campus. The case has drawn significant attention from university authorities and law enforcement agencies.
Incident Details and Police Complaint
The confrontation occurred on April 14 when Dr. Kulwant Singh visited the AMU campus to meet a female friend who is also an engineering student at the university. According to the police report, as Dr. Singh was preparing to leave the campus premises, he was suddenly surrounded by a group of men.
In his formal police complaint, Dr. Singh alleged that four individuals, including the arrested students Shahbaz Haq (22), a first-year BTech student, and Nazeem Khan (25), a final-year MTech student, began verbally abusing him and making inflammatory communal remarks. The situation escalated to the point where Dr. Singh felt threatened enough to immediately dial the emergency number '112' to request police assistance.
University and Police Response
The university's proctorial team promptly arrived at the scene and escorted Dr. Singh to the proctor's office for his safety. Police personnel also reached the location and conducted a preliminary investigation before safely escorting Dr. Singh off the university premises. By that time, the accused students had already left the area.
An FIR was officially registered on April 17 at Aligarh's Civil Lines police station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 126(2) for wrongful restraint, Section 191(2) for rioting, and Section 351(2) for criminal intimidation.
Official Statements and Investigation Progress
AMU Proctor Professor Mohammed Naved Khan addressed the situation, stating, "Two students of AMU are currently in police custody. We will summon them and seek a formal explanation once they obtain bail. Based on their response and the circumstances, we will determine our future course of action regarding this serious matter."
Aligarh SP (City) Aditya Bansal provided additional details about the investigation, explaining, "The accused individuals were identified through careful examination of CCTV footage from the campus. According to the complainant's statement, they engaged in inappropriate behavior and made provocative remarks. Our investigative efforts are now focused on identifying any other individuals who may have been involved in this incident."
Broader Implications and University Protocol
This incident raises important questions about campus security protocols and inter-community relations within educational institutions. The alleged use of inflammatory language describing the university as "mini Pakistan" has particularly drawn concern from various quarters.
The university administration faces the challenging task of balancing disciplinary action with educational rehabilitation while maintaining the institution's reputation for academic excellence and communal harmony. The case also highlights the importance of proper visitor management systems and emergency response mechanisms on university campuses.
As the legal proceedings continue, both university authorities and law enforcement agencies are monitoring the situation closely to ensure appropriate justice is served while maintaining peace and order in the academic environment.
