Assam HSLC Topper Jyotirmoy Das Triumphs Over Severe Financial Hardship
In a remarkable story of resilience and dedication, Jyotirmoy Das from Dharamtola village in Assam's Bajali district has topped the state's HSLC Class X examination despite facing extreme financial difficulties. The young scholar's journey to academic excellence was paved with significant sacrifices by his family, who often went without basic necessities to support his education.
Months of Unpaid Fees and Family Sacrifices
Jyotirmoy's family struggled to pay his school fees regularly, with payments frequently delayed for six to seven months at a time. His father, Satish Chandra Das, works as a Grade-III clerical employee at a nursing home in Pathsala town, earning a modest salary that barely covered their essential needs.
The family made substantial cutbacks in their daily living expenses to ensure Jyotirmoy and his brother could continue their studies. Even during major festivals like Rongali Bihu and Durga Puja, Jyotirmoy never requested new clothes, understanding the financial strain his family was under.
Studying in Challenging Conditions
Despite achieving the highest marks in the state, Jyotirmoy studied in a small three-room house without a separate room of his own. The entire family, including his brother who is pursuing BCom at a government college in Howly, had to adjust their living arrangements to accommodate study needs.
"School fees often remained unpaid for six to seven months and my parents reduced other household expenses to meet educational needs of my brother and me," Jyotirmoy explained, demonstrating remarkable maturity about his family's financial situation.
Parental Determination and Support
Satish Chandra Das, 52, revealed how the family prioritized education above all else. "To keep my children's education going, we had to reduce spending on food, clothing and other essentials," he said. Despite these hardships, the family never sought external help, and the school management never pressured them about the delayed fees.
The family owns no farmland, unlike many rural households that can supplement their income through agriculture. This meant they had to purchase everything they needed, adding to their financial burden.
Consistent Academic Excellence
Jyotirmoy has been a top-performing student for years, ranking first in his school since Class IV. He studied at the same institution from pre-primary level onward, building a strong academic foundation.
School headmaster Hemendra Kumar Sarma noted Jyotirmoy's confidence, saying, "Jyotirmoy was always confident of securing the top position and would tell friends that no one could change his roll number."
Future Aspirations and Opportunities
Following his outstanding result, several senior secondary schools in Pathsala have approached Jyotirmoy with offers of free admission. While he remains undecided about his next educational institution, his ambition is clear: he wants to become a doctor and is considering pursuing Classes XI and XII at a leading institution in Assam.
Jyotirmoy's mother is a homemaker, and the family's story highlights the extraordinary sacrifices many Indian families make to ensure their children receive quality education. Their determination in the face of financial adversity serves as an inspiration to students across the state and country.
