Beary Language Push Gains Momentum in Karnataka Schools, Approval Expected Soon
The movement to introduce Beary as a third optional language in Karnataka's educational institutions is rapidly gaining traction. The Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy has expressed strong optimism that official approvals could be secured within the coming months, marking a significant step forward for the linguistic community.
Positive Engagement with Education Authorities
Academy president Umar UH revealed to TOI that a delegation recently met with Karnataka Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa at Vidhana Soudha. During this crucial meeting, a formal memorandum was submitted, specifically requesting the inclusion of Beary language instruction starting from class 6. Umar noted that the minister's response was highly encouraging, fostering hopes that the proposal might receive clearance within the next two months.
Favorable Ground Conditions and Historical Context
Umar emphasized that the existing educational landscape in Dakshina Kannada district is particularly conducive to this initiative. Several schools in the region already offer Tulu and Konkani as optional languages from class 6, establishing a precedent for introducing additional regional languages. "The ground situation is favourable," he stated, acknowledging that while this demand has been raised multiple times in previous years, it has now reached an advanced and serious stage of governmental consideration.
Systematic Preparations Underway
The proposal is being methodically developed through several key preparatory steps:
- Education department officials have actively collected feedback from schools across the district to gauge interest and logistical readiness.
- Detailed discussions have been conducted under the Department of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT) to thoroughly assess the feasibility of implementing Beary language programs.
- The academy plans to commence work on developing a comprehensive syllabus in close consultation with subject matter experts and linguists.
- Formal instruction will utilize the Kannada script, ensuring alignment with the state's primary linguistic framework.
- Specific schools where the language can be effectively introduced will be carefully identified, and teacher training programs are already being planned. Umar mentioned that several educators have already expressed preliminary interest in teaching Beary.
Broader Cultural and Educational Impact
Umar highlighted the profound cultural significance of this initiative. If approved, the move is expected to significantly strengthen cultural identity and preserve the unique linguistic heritage of the Beary community for future generations. Beyond the classroom, the academy is exploring innovative strategies to popularize the language, especially among younger demographics and the global Beary diaspora.
These broader plans include developing engaging audio-visual learning modules. There is also consideration of possibly using an English script for certain materials, a strategic move aimed at making the language more accessible to children of the Beary community settled abroad, thereby fostering linguistic continuity across borders.
