BHU Hostel Protest Over Water Shortage Erupts Into Violent Clash

A peaceful demonstration by residents of Birla A Hostel at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, demanding better drinking water facilities, descended into chaos and violence late on Saturday night. The protest, which began as a sit-in, culminated in alleged stone-pelting that left a security personnel critically injured.

Roots of the Agitation: Inadequate Water Infrastructure

The unrest originated from longstanding grievances regarding insufficient drinking water provisions at the hostel. According to Chief Proctor Professor Sandeep Pokharia, a group of hostel inmates staged a sit-in protest on the hostel road, voicing their frustration over the inadequate capacity of the Reverse Osmosis (RO) system and water coolers. The students argued that the current infrastructure was woefully insufficient to meet the needs of the large number of residents, creating daily hardships.

University Intervention and Escalation

University authorities swiftly intervened to address the immediate concerns. Around 12:15 AM, arrangements were made to provide drinking water to the protesting students. Following this intervention, the demonstrators agreed to call off their protest and began dispersing to return to their rooms. However, the situation took a violent turn during the dispersal phase.

A few students allegedly resorted to stone-pelting, targeting security personnel stationed at the site. This aggressive act resulted in critical injuries to one security guard, who was immediately rushed to the BHU Trauma Centre for emergency medical treatment. The sudden violence transformed a resolved protest into a serious security incident.

Aftermath and Administrative Response

In the wake of the violence, Professor Pokharia confirmed that five students involved in the stone-pelting incident have been identified through investigation. An FIR has been formally registered against these students at the Lanka police station, marking a legal escalation of the matter. The university administration, along with enhanced security personnel and local police, maintained a strong presence at the hostel site throughout the early morning hours to monitor the situation and prevent further unrest.

Authorities reported that the volatile situation was eventually brought under control, with normalcy restored in the hostel premises by morning. The incident has highlighted the pressing infrastructure issues within student accommodations at the prestigious university while also raising concerns about protest management and campus security protocols.
