CA Final Exams Twice Yearly from May 2026

ICAI Announces Major Overhaul of CA Final Examination Schedule

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has unveiled a significant revision to the schedule for the Chartered Accountant (CA) final examinations, set to take effect from May 2026. This strategic change marks a pivotal shift in the professional certification process for aspiring accountants across the nation.

Transition to Biannual Examination Cycles

Under the newly implemented system, the CA final exams will be conducted twice a year, specifically in the months of May and November. This restructuring involves the discontinuation of the January examination session, which was previously part of the annual schedule. The decision was formally communicated by the ICAI Council following extensive deliberations and consideration of feedback from a diverse range of stakeholders within the accounting community.

Currently, the CA final examinations are administered three times annually, in January, May, and September. Starting with the May 2026 session, students will have a reduced number of attempts, with only two opportunities available each year. The May 2026 examination will serve as the inaugural session under this revised and streamlined timetable.

Rationale Behind the Schedule Change

A Jalapathi, the secretary of the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Chartered Accountants Association, provided insights into the reasoning behind this adjustment. He highlighted that under the previous system, results were typically declared approximately six weeks after each examination attempt. This tight turnaround often created challenges for students, making it difficult to adequately prepare for subsequent attempts in a timely and effective manner.

The new announcement is designed to empower students by allowing them to plan their studies more strategically and allocate their time more efficiently. By reducing the frequency of exams, the ICAI aims to alleviate the pressure on candidates and enhance their overall preparation quality.

Enhanced Practical Training and Professional Readiness

In addition to the schedule modification, Jalapathi emphasized the importance of extending the CA Articleship duration from two years to three years. This proposed extension is intended to provide students with increased practical exposure and hands-on experience in the finance and accounting sectors. The change is strategically aimed at streamlining the CA final process while enabling students to focus better and gain more practical knowledge, thereby strengthening their readiness for professional opportunities in the country's financial and economic sectors.

Structure of the CA Course

The Chartered Accountancy course is structured across three distinct levels:

  • Foundation Level: Designed for students who have successfully completed their Class 12 education.
  • Intermediate Level: Comprising two groups, this stage builds on foundational knowledge.
  • Final Level: The culminating phase of the program, which requires the completion of a two-year Articleship training period before students are eligible to sit for the final examination.

This comprehensive revision by the ICAI reflects a commitment to optimizing the educational and professional pathway for future chartered accountants, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet the evolving demands of the financial industry.
