CBSE Announces Major Academic Reforms for 2026–27 Session
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has unveiled significant educational reforms, including a phased rollout of a three-language formula starting from Class VI and the introduction of a two-tier system for mathematics and science in Class IX. These changes are scheduled to be implemented from the 2026–27 academic session, as confirmed by board officials.
Structured Three-Language Model
Language learning will now follow a structured three-language model, organized into distinct stages: R1, R2, and R3. In alignment with the recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework under the National Education Policy, at least two of the three languages must be Indian. This initiative continues CBSE's phased approach to multilingual education, ensuring that each student studies a minimum of two Indian languages.
Key Implementation Details:
- The third language will become mandatory from Class VI onwards.
- This move aims to promote linguistic diversity and cultural understanding among students.
- Officials emphasize that this structured model is designed to enhance language proficiency in a systematic manner.
Two-Tier System for Mathematics and Science
A significant change will be introduced in the subjects of mathematics and science through a two-level system, also effective from the 2026–27 session. All students will study the standard curriculum and appear for a common three-hour examination carrying 80 marks.
Advanced Proficiency Option: Students seeking greater proficiency may opt for an additional advanced level in one or both subjects. This advanced component will involve a separate one-hour examination carrying 25 marks, specifically aimed at assessing higher-order thinking skills and deeper conceptual understanding.
Examination Structure:
- The standard examination is compulsory for all students.
- The advanced paper is entirely optional.
- Marks from the advanced paper will not be included in the overall aggregate score.
Instead, students who score 50% or above in the advanced paper will have this achievement recorded separately on their mark sheets, providing recognition for their enhanced subject mastery without affecting their main grades.
Objectives and Impact
These reforms are part of CBSE's broader strategy to modernize the educational framework and cater to diverse learning needs. The three-language formula aims to strengthen multilingual capabilities, while the two-tier system in mathematics and science is designed to encourage academic excellence and critical thinking among students.
Officials have clarified that these changes are intended to create a more flexible and inclusive learning environment, allowing students to pursue advanced studies based on their interests and aptitudes. The phased rollout ensures a smooth transition for schools, teachers, and students, with detailed guidelines expected to be released in the coming months.
