Mumbai: Just a year after a newly renovated ward at VN Desai Hospital in Santacruz faced severe water leakages, officials said there won’t be a repeat of it this monsoon, as waterproofing works on the third floor will be completed in time.
The issue had become a major concern because Rs 16 crore had been spent on the renovation works, and patients who had already been moved into the ward subsequently had to be moved out. The State Human Rights Commission had also taken note of the situation. “They closed the case just at the end of May. We have informed them that 80% of the work has been completed,” said Medical Superintendent Dr Mayura Nagle.
However, the hospital has now found another set of leakages in the matron’s office, the female ward toilet, and the operation theatre (OT). A nurse at the hospital said, “Water was poured on the roof to test it, and severe issues were found. We were saved because the monsoon is delayed. They have shifted the matron’s office and the OT to another floor for now.”
Dr Nagle said the hospital is trying to finish most of the third-floor work by the end of the month. “The other works will take some more time,” she added.
Meanwhile, the hospital’s x-ray system broke down last week. A doctor from the hospital said the breakdown had forced many patients to get scans from private facilities. Dr Nagle confirmed that the x-ray services have now resumed.
