A 15-year-old boy was shot and four other people were stabbed during chaotic celebrations following the New York Knicks' victory on Thursday night, police said. The violence erupted near the team's home arena in Manhattan as thousands of fans flooded the streets to celebrate the Knicks' playoff win.
The teenager was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials. The four stabbing victims, all adults, were also hospitalized and are expected to recover.
In total, 15 people were arrested, including a 28-year-old man charged with assault for punching a police officer. Other arrests were made for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and weapons possession.
Police said the incidents appeared to be isolated and not part of a coordinated attack. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are reviewing surveillance footage to identify additional suspects.
The Knicks organization released a statement condemning the violence and expressing concern for the victims. The team also thanked law enforcement for their quick response.
This is not the first time sports celebrations in New York have turned violent. In 2021, multiple people were shot and stabbed during celebrations after the Brooklyn Nets' playoff win. Officials urge fans to celebrate responsibly and to report any suspicious activity to authorities.
